Giants vs. Falcons GameThread - NFL Wild Card Playoffs
Day two of the 2011 NFL playoffs is about to begin, with the New York Giants hosting the Atlanta Falcons in today's opening game. The winner of the NFC's No. 4 versus No. 5 game will travel to take on the top-seeded Green Bay Packers in next week's divisional round.
On Saturday, the No. 3 seed New Orleans Saints set offensive records in holding off the Detroit Lions, 45-28, to advance to the divisional round. They'll travel out west to take on the San Francisco 49ers for the right to participate in this year's NFC championship game.
On the AFC side of things, the No. 3 seed Houston Texans took care of business in beating the Cincinnati Bengals 31-10 on Saturday, meaning that they'll travel to take on the Baltimore Ravens next weekend. That means that the winner of this afternoon's wild card matchup between the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the New England Patriots next weekend.
Discuss today's Giants versus Falcons game right here - and we'll have a fresh thread up for Denver/Pittsburgh later today!

Unless the falcons find a way to slow down the Eli to Cruz connection I don't see how Atlanta has a chance today.

They have Ryan to Jones as a counter move. I think the Falcons win because they have the better run game, which to me is the best observable difference between these two teams.

Why wasn't there a thread for the games yesterday?
T.J. Yates looked terrible. No way they win a game is he needs to be the reason behind it.

He did enough and didn't make any dumb killer mistakes...
I’m not sure what else you expect from a 5th round 3rd string rookie qb…especially the way foster was running the ball. I think he played great given the circumstances.

In fairness, yes. I just don’t think he’s got enough of “it” to do damage if he’s required to be the one dishing it out.

Does anyone else
throw up in their mouth a little when they hear Mike Mularkey called an offensive genius?
That January 2, 2005 lose to the Steelers still sticks in my mind as a ton 5 worst lose in Bills history, maybe the worst. Then how the team completely fell apart in the 05 season? Those were two terrible years.
Mularkey might be returning to the division, and to head coaching. Dolphins are gonna interview him I heard.

Let Mularkey get the Dolphins HC Job.
2 Division wins a year if he gets the job!!!!!!!

Why did the Giants throw a pass when it was 3rd and inches?
I don’t get it.

Listening on Sirius...
they thought it was 1st down, as did the Falcons D.
The Falcons defenders were looking confused when the punt return team came on the field for them on 4th down, they thought it was 2nd

The Falcon Spread
The spread does not win playoff NFL football. Gilbride and Mularkey were the first 2 to make the Bills a 4 and 5 WR offense. Gilbride learned from his mistakes and won a super bowl with the Giants. Mularkey is still stuck in spread land and hasn’t won jack.

The Patriots have run the spread offense for years and so have the Colts. The spread does work. And don’t say, “Well Fitzpatrick isn’t Brady or Manning.” That isn’t what you said. You guys said that the spread doesn’t work.
HAHAHAHA
A QB sneak from an empty backfield?!?
Mularkey is an idiot.
The Patriots have run the spread offense for years and so have the Colts
Neither won anything when they used it as a base offense instead of a package.

I think they ran the spread when they won at least one of their Superbowls. They have won the Superbowl without a running game. And Brady has successfully fun a QB sneak from an empty backfield.
Nope
The pats ran the spread when the lost to the gmen and lost their perfect season, they didn’t run it as a base offense in the super bowls they won.

Are you sure about that? I am fairly sure that they played an entire season and the Superbowl without a typical running game. I remember, and this was when Weis was still their coordinator I believe, that they would spread the defense out and then run the ball in situations that they defense wasn’t expecting it. In fact, I remember Brady running a few keepers up the middle to get first downs and it drove me crazy.
i'm sure
the 16-0 season was when they ran the spread as a base, and it was exposed in the superbowl. I never seen Brady get knocked around like he was that day, because that is the weakness of the spread. A team that can get after the QB, can just knock the crap out of him in the spread because there is no blocking help if you have better DBs than the O has WRs.

Have the Patriots won a SB since they had a VERY good defense and a game-managing Brady?

the spread works when you have good players running it...
There you go.

NO......
The spread works when you have 4 or 5 receivers that are better than the 4 or 5 DBs of the other team where you get a mismatch. That’s when the spread works.

……… but Breeeeeeeze played out of his mind last night.
AND he has 3 good RBs. I can see it happening.
They are an offensive dynamo.

could be interesting....
but you know the old adage, “Defense wins Championships”, and right now, the Niners, and especially, the way this game is going, the Giants hold those cards…
Optimistic??? Of course I am!! I'm a Bills fan, and as of right now, we are undefeated on the regular season!!!
Things are truly looking up!!!
Defense wins championships when the opposing QB fails. Otherwise, QBs win championships. Lately, defenses lose championships.

I've never considered Eli...
in the upper tier of QBs in the league, but this year, he may graduate….
On that note… I heard a good one on the radio the other day… Guy said, “You can’t spell elite without Eli.” Gotta admit, I laughed…

Pretty much agree
Just pretty amazing the difference between a guy like him, and a Bills QB from the last 10 yrs
This just in
tackling a ball-carrier to the ground is now illegal
disgusting flag....

I am too
though I was talking with a bunch of Giants fans prior to the Dallas game and they wanted to hire back the newly available Spagnolo as DC. Glad to see him have some success after a tough year.

got to have a great pass rush to run his kind of D.......
I am glad he is doing well, but I never liked the T2 he ran while he was here. If the Giants front four wouldn’t have gotten healthy, they would have missed the playoffs even with Eli having an excellent year.
