It’s January. Most of the bowl games have wrapped up, and the Bills are business as usual in the offseason. That means that it’s time to talk about the draft.
I’m sure some of you are sick to death of talking about the draft – especially still being 4 months away – but the draft is still my favorite time of the NFL calendar. Sure, if the Bills made the Super Bowl I’d rather watch that, but with them never making the post season I must divert my attention elsewhere.
So I’ve put together a list of 11 prospects that I would like the Bills to get, for one reason or another. They aren’t all 1st round or 2nd round selections; many of them will likely get drafted in the middling rounds. These aren’t players that I think are necessarily the #1 at their position, but players that intrigue me based on their college careers (what they’ve become or may have become, what they can still blossom into) and could help the Bills. In no particular order…
1) Marvin McNutt – WR – Iowa – 6’4 215 lbs. – (2nd-3rd round)
Big wide receiver from a respected college program with good hands and decent speed. 4 years of college production.
2) Da’Jon McKnight – WR – Minn – 6’3 211 lbs. – (4th round)
Big wide receiver from a (long, long, long ago) respected college program (/sadface). He has solid hands and decent speed. Senior. Had good junior production but had a disappointing senior year with a raw passer (Marqueis Grey) throwing to him. With better talent throwing to him in the NFL I think he could be a very solid player.
3) Michael Floyd – WR – Notre Dame – 6’3 224 lbs. – (1st round)
Big wide receiver with great hands and good speed. Has had great production throughout his career. Senior. Young. Has had a couple alcohol related minors (not exactly morally reprehensible) and a DUI (morally reprehensible). Supposedly he has changed after his DUI so if CHIX believes this I’m on board (I value character).
4) Alshon Jeffery – WR – South Carolina – 6’4 229 lbs. – (1st round)
Big, big, big wide receiver with solid speed for his size. Long limbs help him snatch balls out of the air even when he’s “covered.” If CHIX is on board with his work ethic I would love to have him opposite Steve Johnson.
5) Nick Toon – WR – Wisconsin – 6’3 220 lbs. – (2nd – 3rd round)
Another senior WR with good size. Could be a good number 2 opposite Steve Johnson.
6) Whitney Mercilus – DE – Illinois – 6’4 265 lbs. – (1st – 2nd round)
Has had one great year of production. Non stop motor. Good size. Doesn’t necessarily have elite speed but can be a very productive DE next to Dareus and Willaims.
7) Melvin Ingram – DE/OLB – South Carolina – 6’2 276 lbs. (1st round)
Doesn’t fit Buddy’s preferred stature for a DE/OLB in the 3-4 or 4-3 but he has elite athleticism and would make a very intriguing prospect. He may be raw coming out of college but he has a high ceiling in my opinion.
8) Jared Crick – DE – Nebraska – 6’6 285 lbs. - (late 1st – early 2nd)
Had two good years of production before hurting himself his senior year. Good size. If we switch back to a 4-3 he could be a good replacement for Kelsay at LDE. If we continue in the 3-4, it’s possible he could gain a little weight and be a good pass-rushing DE (if CHIX went Ingram/Crick with our 1st and 2nd round picks I think our D-Line could be very formidable next year).
9) Ryan Tannehill – QB – Texas A&M – 6’4 222 lbs – (1st round)
Has had success in his short time as a QB. Likely has much more room to grow.
10) Dan Persa - QB –Northwestern - 6'1 210 lbs. (3rd – 5th round)
Hasn’t been lights out at Northwestern but I am intrigued on his potential in the pros. Has a solid arm, great accuracy. Might be the type of QB Chan would like. Might be a better prospect than his stats would show.
11) Russell Wilson – QB – Wisconsin – 5’11 201 lbs. (3rd round)
Height be damned. Senior QB with good accuracy, good YPA, and a good senior year. Sure he was playing behind a fantastic offensive line, but I am intrigued and would be supportive if CHIX wanted to take a flier on him and develop him behind Fitzy.
These are 11 prospects that I would be happy/bemused if some were picked by the Bills as a combination –I sure as heck don’t want them selecting 5 WRs in the same draft - it is not a mock draft. I’m not a scout, and I haven’t watched multiple games in depth about each of these players, but based on some youtube scouting, water cooler talk, and perusing around the Interwebs, these are some guys of whom 2 or 3 I wouldn’t mind seeing next year with a Buffalo on their helmets.
This is more to get a centralized forum where everyone can display their 11 random prospects (or whatever number you find best) and see everyone's random lists without having to search between random articles.
(if this is better served as a fanshot, Mods please move it without hesitation.)
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
