Should The Buffalo Bills Make Any Bye-Week Lineup Changes?

Timothy T. Ludwig-US PRESSWIRE

Buffalo Bills fans discuss potential lineup changes that the 3-4 team should consider making during its bye week.

The Buffalo Bills are not expected to make major personnel changes during their bye week, but that doesn't mean there won't be tinkering as the team tries to stave off a disappointing 3-4 start and actually try to make that playoff push they expected to make all summer. We all have our own ideas of how to tweak the lineup; I'll present mine below, and hope to discuss some of yours in the comments section, as well. Let's go!

It's time for a switch at right tackle. Erik Pears has been largely terrible this season. I have grown tired of watching mundane pass rushers run around him as if he's a tackling dummy on numerous occasions. Chris Hairston is susceptible to that, too, but he's a much more gifted run blocker. If it were up to me, once Cordy Glenn gets back into the swing of things at left tackle, I'd play Hairston at right tackle and let Pears be the top reserve. This is, after all, a production business. Right?

Let's get that fourth end going. Mario Williams, who is not 100 percent, has been playing a hair too much for my liking. He shouldn't be playing a percent of snaps for every million he makes; that's absurd. Kyle Moore has been, by far, the team's best pass rusher lately - and it's not like the team is great at stopping the run when Moore is on the sidelines. In an effort to cut down on Williams' snaps and get a more functional four-man end rotation going, Moore needs to be more involved on a weekly basis.

A veteran presence at linebacker. Folks, if you haven't read what Kyle Williams said about the defense not "playing fast," do yourself a favor and do so. He's right on the money. That's particularly true of the back seven, where it often looks like guys are standing still waiting for the action to come their way. Kelvin Sheppard has been bad this year, and I believe an additional veteran presence at linebacker will help speed things along. I'd play Kirk Morrison on the inside - he'd only be on the field for roughly 40 percent of snaps, anyway - and hope that his experience would speed up the tempo of the back seven.

How about re-shuffling the cornerbacks? Stephon Gilmore has been good in coverage, but has not made plays and appears hesitant in virtually every other aspect of the game. That said, he needs to keep playing as many snaps as he can, and lining up against the best receiver on a weekly basis. Beyond him, players need to be on the field in this order of preference: Terrence McGee, Aaron Williams and Ron Brooks. Give current nickel back Justin Rogers the Leodis McKelvin treatment to see how he responds, since he's been so bad lately. Let Williams try his hand in the slot (honestly, if it were up to me, he'd be playing safety) and fast track Brooks for that role. Something needs to change here, because the current setup isn't great.

Those are my big ideas. What else do you have, Bills fans?
