The San Francisco 49ers have opened up an early 3-0 lead on the Buffalo Bills thanks in large part to two big plays from running back Frank Gore and tight end Vernon Davis.
On the first two plays of the 49ers' second possession of the day, Gore ripped off a 19-yard run off of left guard, and then Davis got loose on a wheel route behind Buffalo's secondary on a play fake for a massive 53-yard gain. That set San Francisco up deep in Bills territory.
Mercifully, Buffalo's defense stiffened at that point in time. Faced with a 2nd & Goal on the one-yard line, linebacker Nick Barnett stuffed Gore on two short-yardage attempts (with help from teammates on both plays, of course), and the 49ers were forced to settle for a 19-yard field goal from David Akers.
Leodis McKelvin, who has already had a punt return for a touchdown called back due to penalty, returned the ensuing kickoff into 49ers territory. Buffalo's offense is looking to improve on their first drive, when they went three-and-out.
