I typically listen to Buddy Nix every Friday morning but I didn't have time this morning because of other priorities. I was listening to WGR550 and they were talking about what questions they were going to ask Buddy as it pertains to the conversation last week when Buddy mentioned needing a franchise QB. This morning they were going to try and get Buddy to expand on his comments last week and try to get him to say something about the 2013 draft and getting a QB soon. It looks like he took the bait, but honestly I think he wanted to.
Bills fans have been clamoring for a franchise QB since Jim Kelly. Other than JP Losman Buffalo hasn't really attempted to get an early QB and develop them. Which is insane in today's NFL and the most obvious reason for us being perennial losers. There's not anyone in the NFL that doesn't think that QB is the most important position on the field and Buddy Nix knows how important that position is as well. Even if fans think he's neglected the position, which he has, it doesn't mean he doesn't know the value of the QB position in the NFL. He does.
This morning on WGR550 Buddy said "I really think we need to address it this year". Music to my ears. Buddy did caution that “The thing you can’t do is create one. You can’t go out thinking I’ve got to make this guy a player. If you do then you’re going to be in a bigger mess. You don’t want to do that. We try to guard against that but we do need another one and we need to do it this time.”
Buddy continued: “If you got a (Andrew) Luck, an RG3 (Robert Griffin III), a Cam (Newton), those were the buzz guys every year and it proved to be accurate on those guys. But I don't see one of those yet in this draft. That may develop later on, but there is a lot of good players in the draft, a lot of good quarterbacks."
WGR noted that what Buddy was looking for in a QB was a strong arm, being mobile enough to get out of trouble and he said the two most important things are accuracy and anticipation. Which I agree whole heartedly with.
Follow the link below for the whole WGR article and the audio from the interview. While you’re at it, start paying more attention to the top QBs in this up coming draft because it looks like Buffalo will finally try to seriously upgrade the most important position on the team. And it’s about damn time!
