Buffalo Bills' Marcell Dareus On Aftermath Of Brother's Murder

Timothy T. Ludwig-US PRESSWIRE

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus spoke with Canoe.ca's John Kryk about the life-altering events surrounding his 19-year-old brother's murder on September 9.

Back on September 9, Simeon Gilmore - the 19-year-old brother of Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus - was murdered. Dareus, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, did not miss the team's next game, nor has he missed a game all season.

It's easy to forget as fans, who view a season in linear fashion and tend to gloss over events like this in the name of almighty production, that Dareus has continued to deal with his loss on a day-by-day basis. The extent to which his brother's murder affected the defensive tackle was revealed in an interview with John Kryk at Canoe.ca.

"I’ve just got back into my own now," Dareus told Kryk. "Since (Week 10), I told the coaches and I told the players – there’s no nonsense to me now. I’m gonna play my butt off. I’m not going to be distracted. I was really distracted before that. I had a lot of fan support, which I appreciated. But at the same time, (Simeon) still wasn’t here. He was my youngest brother. I was real close to him."

Dareus goes into detail about his mourning period with Kryk, discussing his fear of leaving home, the difficulty he had investing himself into his profession, and the lifestyle changes he's made since the tragedy. As fans mentally prepare for another Bills off-season, Kryk's chat with Dareus serves as a chilling reminder that none of this other stuff matters as much as we make it seem.
