Buffalo Bills To Interview Doug Marrone, Ray Horton, Per Reports

Jeff Zelevansky

Even as the team has not yet publicly made a decision about GM Buddy Nix, the Buffalo Bills have reportedly set up head coaching interviews with Doug Marrone (Syracuse head coach) and Ray Horton (Cardinals defensive coordinator).

With the fate of GM Buddy Nix still undecided (at least in the eyes of the public), the Buffalo Bills are reportedly already setting up coaching interviews. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Bills will interview Syracuse Orange head coach Doug Marrone for its vacant head coaching position, while CBS' Jason La Canfora reports that Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton will interview for the post, as well.

Marrone, 48, has spent the last four years coaching Syracuse, where he's turned one of the worst programs in Division I into a respectable program with two bowl wins in four years. He's 25-25 with the Orange, won the Big East and the Pinstripe Bowl this year, and has turned quarterback Ryan Nassib into one of the hotter names (so far) in the 2013 NFL Draft class.

Prior to his work at Syracuse, Marrone served as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2006-2008, working under Sean Payton. Per Schefter, Marrone will also interview for the Cleveland Browns' vacant head coaching job.

Horton, too, is in demand; he'll interview not only with the Bills and the Browns, but with the Cardinals as the potential in-house replacement for the fired Ken Whisenhunt. The 52-year-old coach has spent the past two seasons coordinating Arizona's defense; prior to that, he spent seven seasons as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he coached defensive backs. His time in Pittsburgh coincided with Bills assistant GM Doug Whaley.

Despite Lovie Smith's reported interest in the job, Marrone and Horton are the first two solid reports on Bills interviewees that we've yet seen. Expect more in the coming days.
