RG III - What If??

Okay, I got this idea from a poster on another web-site. Let me start out by saying that I don't think this is a likely scenario, but his post got me thinking.

I think we've all agreed that we have a glaring need for a RDE and SAM LB. We also have pretty pressing needs at CB and WR. Another thing that is quite evident is that we have a LOT of cap room to spend, if we choose to spend it and if the free agents choose to come here.

I think most of us believe that we also have a glaring need for a franchise QB. However, most of us want to be competitive right now, and don't want to use our #10 pick to address the QB spot which would likely not provide an immediate return on our investment.

So, what if we were able to fill our immediate, critical needs via free agency. Let's say we are able to go out and sign Mario Williams, Vincent Jackson, a decent (not great CB) like Routt/Thomas/etc., and a decent (not great SAM LB)?

Then, we turn around and trade our #10 pick, Stevie, and second rounders this year and next to St. Louis for the #2 pick. We would then select RG III as our franchise QB.

I think it is feasible from a cap perspective. And I don't think anyone can argue that our defense would be massively improved just by adding Mario plus a decent CB. We'd be swapping out Stevie for V Jax, so we'd still have a respectable amount of weapons on offense.

What would you think about that scenario? Personally, I think this is the only scenario that I'd be willing to give up that much to get RG III. We'd have to fill those defensive holes through free agency in order to be able to sacrifice the picks it would take to move up and get Griffin. But, if by some miracle, all of those things play out in free agency, I would love to see Nix do whatever it takes to move up and get RG III. He could then sit a year behind Fitz and then be ready to take over a young, solid team in 2013.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I meant to say that in the nicest way possible but didn’t know how to represent that… maybe a :) would have worked!

I wanted RG3 so bad

I wish we could have had the 10th pick last year and the 3rd this year.

Still wouldn't get him with the 3rd

He’s going 2nd. Still would have had to trade up to get him. The real hurt was Luck not coming out last year otherwise we’d have the original RG3: Cam Newton.

I'd take RGIII

Are you for real?

I love RG3 and I want RG3 but Newton actually did prove he belonged last year and looks nothing short of a star QB whose potential is limitless. He’s a known commodity and his physical skills are 2nd to none. RG3 might be that too (I think he will be). But we know Newton is already.

by jmkney on Feb 14, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

could be 50/50

RG3 as a grad student means he is hard working and bright.

Cam has shown he is hard working and capable.

Cam is bigger.

I take either as instant upgrades to all potential candidates. I think we would have taken Cam. I think we would certainly take RG3. Too bad we won’t get any more of a chance at Griffin than we did at Newton.

He is a man of courage who does not run away, but remains at his post and fights against the enemy.

sorry to say this but

i think it would take more than stevie and next year’s 2nd to move up from 10 to 2, especially considering the value of the player slotted there.

by lord gloom on Feb 13, 2012 1:23 PM EST reply actions

he did actually say

the 10th, this years 2nd, next years 2nd and Stevie. You missed a 2nd in there and to be honest it is a good deal for the #2 pick.

That said, I wouldn’t want the Bills doing it – I rarely say this, but here I will – the price is too high !

even so

it would take our first next year to do this

by lord gloom on Feb 13, 2012 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

maybe so maybe no

We just need to have the best offer and the #10, 2 × 2nds and a guy who would be their no#1 WR has to be close ! It’s effectively at least a 1st and 3 × 2nds (Steve is worth a 2nd at minimum you’d have to agree)

We'd have to sign Stevie first

and why sign him, just to trade him?

Franchise Tag

Is only around 8 million and none of it guaranteed – so no cap hit if he is tagged and traded.

Could we trade the rights to him like the sabres did with erhoff over the summer?

by -R.G.III- on Feb 14, 2012 8:23 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

To much 'IF' for me

But, What if he fell to 10. Crazy S**t happens on draft day and people fall year after year…
So what if RG3 fell to the 10 spot?
Then I would make him an investment in the future. BPA even if he has an injury or issue as you are going to groom him behind Fitzmagic anyways for a season or two. But still a talent that is a FQB.
Generally I hate when coaches take gimmicky collage players when they are in the critical point in their own career with the organization but I don’t think he is gimmicky and I feel he ties in perfectly with Chan’s system.
All of this if we are saying ‘IF’.

by hacknslash on Feb 13, 2012 2:21 PM EST reply actions

technically

that wouldn’t work in madden because you only have 3 trade slots for each team.

Believe me,

I’d love to have RGIII, it’s just that he’s probably going to go #2 and we don’t have the freedom to trade away our next few good picks. I could see it happening on another team, but not with Nix. If we had a great roster and no glaring needs, we could take him. We’re still rebuilding.

by KileyJ on Feb 15, 2012 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

less then 1%

I’d say there’s a smaller then 1% chance of getting RG3…. I’m not saying that drafting a QB in the 1st round is at this percentage but RG3 is going top 5 and history shows that Buddy doesn’t trade up or down a whole lot. Time to focus on a different QB prospect. Although I would hope and expect the Bills avoid the QB position completely in this draft. This regime has made their investment at QB in Fits, which is not a bad thing…. Since they did that they can fill other needs.

by tremblay52 on Feb 13, 2012 6:08 PM EST reply actions

I just like the idea of aggressively going after top free agents, I think the organization is interested in making low risk moves at this time. Giving a bunch of draft picks and the #1 WR for an unproven but promising QB isn’t the remedy to rebuilding a team. There are too many areas of the depth chart that need to be addressed and the last time I checked we just signed a QB to a long term deal.

absolutley not, take coples or upshaw at 10 and in the 2nd rd draft foles to be the future at the qb

by gene3083 on Feb 13, 2012 10:37 PM EST reply actions

$4 million dollar man

They wont draft RG3 due to the fact that we have our own in Brad Smith. He was definately worth his contract. NOT. what a waste of a roster spot. I say no to the trade scenario. Buddy has already admitted he doesnt trade so we need to focus on who is the best player available at 10.

by koozyburger on Feb 14, 2012 2:07 AM EST reply actions

That is crazy talk.
They wont draft RG3 due to the fact that we have our own in Brad Smith

If Brad Smith could throw down field 40+ yards as accurately as RGIII, Brad Smith would have been a top 10 draft pick.

No way

This team needs starters. If they sign all those guys, the draft could put them over the top and they’d go from a good team to a very good playoff team overnight. Believe in the beard, there is treasure in there.

I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.
