State of the 53Man roster +$$$
As with all things-- BILLS included-- Money rules. So. For this updated version of the 53 man roster, I've decided to add this years cap values next to each players name. This makes the challenge of fielding the 53man roster vastly more difficult. Some things to note:
--by popular demand I've slotted D.Jones in as the 6th WR (and gunner)
--I've also slotted Thigpen in at QB2 with the belief that we will NOT take a QB in this year's draft. I assume Lee (our new QB coach) will have his hands full coaching up Fitz this offseason. Once he's had a chance to mold Fitz into the best QB he can be, THEN we will draft a developmental QB (2013 draft) so Lee can focus his attention there. That also logically coincides with contracts Thigpen and Fitz were given.
--I'm toying with the idea of moving S.McKlellin to sOLB since he knows Wannsteadt's system & was brought in because Stache trusts him. I think he could be a good 2 down fit there, and would alleviate an obvious need.
--S.Johnson wants 7.5million/year. does he deserve to be the HIGHEST paid player on the team? I don't know. But I do know that CHIX seems to favor paying his proven veterans somewhere in the range of 4-6million/year (as evidenced by the contracts penned under his reign). It doesn't then surprise me that CHIX's first offer was 5.5million, and I have serious doubts he'll want to go much higher.
--Also, unless I'm missing something, I think DJ's estimate that this years rookie class will get 11million seems high. Based on C.J.Spiller's contract (3.02million) and B.Gabbert's contract last year (3.o million, he was the #10 pick last year), I think our #10 pick will be worth somewhere from 3- 3.3million, not the 4.64million we paid for a #3pick (Dareus).
Regardless, here's the breakdown, along with cap room totals as per the JETS cap blog DJ posted earlier in the week. Click to make it bigger!
(oh, and if S.Routt is signed, look for him to get paid similar to D.Florence, +/-4.5-5million/year)
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

That’s an awesome chart Nep.
I think maybe the reason folks are not posting is that its all out the window if Buddy rolls the 20 mill 2011 cap money into this year.
Everything is up in the air right now.

Yeah, I understand. This is more of an attempt to show how difficult it is to play armchair GM. There’s a lot of factors that come into play. The Money part, the 53man part, the how you divvy up the roster spots part. Age, etc. and of course it isn’t set in stone. It’s just a tool to help people thinking about some of the issues we talk about here in a different way.
Take Fred Jackson for instance… he gets paid 2.38million/year! From the way he’s been complaining about getting paid you’d think he was getting veteran league minimum or something. In pictoral form it’s easy to see that information at a glance, and having that info quick at hand can help us have (even better) discussions.
That and people should feel free to download the image and manipulate it if they’d like. Collaboration is a good thing
Good chart
but Moats should make the team, he’s got potential and is a decent pass-rusher. Also, if Easley’s injuries get in the way (unlikely at this point), then does Hagan take his place?
You dont think they might try to switch him back to MLB??

i think i am with Nepenthe
i think that they will simply cut ties, for no good reason. I think he could get picked up elsewhere, and still find success. I don’t understand why, when somebody produces, and aren’t prototypical, that means they aren’t valuable. Take Moats, or Roosevelt. Who says they can’t play? what I have seen, is decent, if not solid play, from both. Put em out there, and lets go. Right?

Really great job Nep!!
I love the chart. I have to look it over and digest it all before I comment, but I think you are really close with this thing.

Not Bad
to start with Moats, Aiken, Jasper, Eddins and Mckelvin will all be back, Florence will be cut,
I am really starting to think this also
If we get a better CB in this deep FA period then they could let Florence go with less cap damage then letting McKelvin go. If we are talking about the nickel or dime spot I could see keeping McKelvin over Florence to save a few bucks. IMO they will both be gone for 2013 anyway.

I find that link and DJ gets all the credit...

highly convenient to see the money impact. I appreciate the effort this post required, and I make reference to it in another thread. I intend to bookmark this, to help me finish up my series. Thanks so much for the post Nepenthe88
