Who should be the next Super Bowl halftime show.
I will tell you, I have seen a lot of concerts, many hundreds including over a hundred on the Grateful Dead alone. The Super Bowl halftime show needs a huge name, we have seen some good ones like the Rolling Stones, Springsteen and Tom Petty.
Some not so good ones like The Who are clearly over the hill. Then those meh ones like Madonna and the Black Eyed Peas.
I think for next year, it is time to return to a true legend of Rock and Roll, who is not over the hill like the Who was when they played the super bowl.
My choice is Eric Clapton.
He is one of the true legends of rock and roll and still plays and sings like a legend today.
If you have never seen him in concert, you don't know what you are missing. After the 80s on experiment with the Black Eyed Peas and Madonna. I am ready for a true legend of rock and roll next year, and my choice is Eric Clapton.
My question to you is would you like to see him play the super bowl halftime show next year? If your answer is no, who would you rather see?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Clapton’s good in his own right, but I think he’s too mellow for his own good these days.
Some of the better choices:
Pearl Jam
Cee Lo Green (dude is awesome)
The Police
Foo Fighters
Journey (new singer is a dead vocal ringer for SP)
Coldplay (I know, I know, but they’re big time and would appeal ot a wide variety of the audience)

i concur with this
i would like to see Cee Lo involved because he sure is entertaining. Throw in, maybe, some Tom Petty, and I am on board.

Unless Cee Lo is getting his lights clocked by Mike Tyson I’d have to mute the entire show.
Would def like to see the Foo Fighters or Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Oh my. How could I forget the Peppers, one of my favorite groups. It would need to be with Frusciante though. Klinghoffer is cool, but nowhere near as awesome as John.
And Cee Lo’s latest album is fantastic. He’s really talented.

ive thought for years that foo fighters would be perfect for it.
a band that can actually play, but its upbeat enough to get main stream appeal. journey and pearl jam are excellent choices too
unfortunately with the way this works, its way more likely that justin biebers doing the halftime show then someone like the foot fighters
i voted ‘yes’ in the poll, but with a caveat: someone else should sing. clapton can still shred, but they would need to get a younger voice to pair with him.
Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.
Right. I mean, PJ is one of my all-time favorite bands, so it’d be great to see them. They just hit their 20-year anniversary a year ago, too. So it’d have that nostalgic flair.
I added Cee Lo because I think he’s awesome and he appeals to mainstream music fans right now, as does Coldplay.

Clapton hasn’t had nearly the mainstream success that Journey has. They’re own the rights to the #1 downloaded song of all time on itunes.
We’re not talking Cream here, we’re talking Clapton, who’s most known for ballads, and Layla – though even that one found greater success as an acoustic ballad.
I like Clapton. Find From the Cradle to be his best work. I just don’t see him as a great Super Bowl show.
A Genesis (post Peter Gabriel era) reunion would be killer, too.

Really Journey?
Never one of the giants of the day like The Who, or Zeppelin, they were a solid 2nd tier 70’s/80’s band that got way overplayed. I still throw-up a little in my mouth when I hear their music. Not that I don’t respect them, I’ve just filled my life quota for Steve Perry’s emotive vocals—kinda like a singer in a smokey room, a smell of wine and cheap perfume. I’m starting to feel the same about Coldplay.
Foo Fighters would be just the kind of high energy band that would really rock a stadium. A more unusual set of bands on the pop punk side of Foo Fighters would be My Chemical Romance and Blink-182 (decent new album last year). Another band of that ilk with legendaty stage shows is Muse. Uprising would be awesome in that venue. Unfortunately too small a following.
I really thought the SB shows, post-nipplegate, had improved until the last couple of years (Fergie and Slash…really?). It seems that eventually things devolve into a revue or medley performed by a potpourri of stars (many of the moment). Acts like Sir Paul, Tom Petty, The Stones, Bruce brought respectability back to the halftime show. It will be interesting to see what happens on the heels of fingergate. If I wanted to go the classic route than Elton John would be logical continuation. My favorite would be Pink Floyd. There wouldn’t be much dancing, but man the sound would be great. No one can bend a note like David Gilmour.
"They're Killin' Me Whitey. They're Killin' Me" -- Lou Saban
well, the who and zeppelin don't still tour
and Steve Perry isn’t in the band anymore. He has been replaced multiple times at this point. Not sure how anyone can like Coldplay. Rihanna ALMOST got me to like them, and then… they performed their own song after his duet thing with her (at the grammys) and all was right with the world again.
I too, am coo wit the Foo.
I would LOVE to see Roger Waters perform, but honestly can’t say that any of their songs really “make sense” but then….. Madonna. So… I can say that I would prefer Waters/ to Gilmour’s Floyd. That’s my opinion. As a guitarist, David Gilmour is phenomenal. But to me, PF is Roger all the way. Great stuff though.

Interesting discussion on Waters… after “Wish you were here”, Waters began taking the band in a different direction. Gilmour describes it as losing balance…which you can understand, but creativity can be sacrificed in the process. Too bad this is something that they couldn’t work out because it’s a benefit to have both. Under DG, PF looks and sounds like PF but with something missing. Under RW, there’s the Mr. Hyde version of the band that’s often hard to understand or like. Either way there are too many kids that are unaware of PF and their vast original contributions to the medium. While WWWH is a great album, I’ve been educating my kids with selections from DSOTM and TW. This is after a heavy dose of the Beatles to lay the foundation.
"They're Killin' Me Whitey. They're Killin' Me" -- Lou Saban
DSOTM and The Wall, are just as good as WYWH....
and among the only three I listen to, primarily. Division Bell is too Gilmour for me, lyrically… Animals is OUTSTANDING, but not really multi-faceted. Anything like, umma gumma, meddle, or piper at the gates (and such) is too Beatles-esque for my liking. Saw Roger Waters at DL (unfortunatly for J2- he got stuck at work, and fortunately for me… I got to go in his place. Thanks again dude.) and it was AMAZING. Still just, so, so good. I would love to see him in any show, but i just don’t see any of them, as a Super Bowl act.

Not that I think Journey is better than the Who, but they sold a TON of records. There were years where Journey was in the top five selling artists.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
Yes they sold a bunch, hence my affliction when hearing them….simply maxed out. I was mildly surprised to see they are credited for selling 75MM albums. Not Zeppelin, Floyd or AC/DC territory, but enough to live well. The Who is credited with 100MM, which isn’t too far away…so there you go.

I like a lot of music
From Abba to Zed Yago and I wasn’t impressed by them either. Just another death metal band. If you are gonna be in any genre’ of music today, you have to be somewhat original to stand out from the masses.
I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.
I think it’s a joke about those type of bands.

No more chances at censorship!
I am not saying Eric Clapton would ever give the middle finger or show his right breast but, I think we should go New Age Country… Brad Paisley!
He is an excellent guitar player, with a different sound to him than any other country singer. He is loved by all walks of life, Grandparents, Mothers, Fathers, single guys/girls, kids and even babies(my 18month old goes bananas when I play his cd in the car)too.
He could host a great halftime show that would guarantee to be censor free. Paisley could also be paired up with John Mayer or Alabama as they have done concerts together. Or even Darius Rucker(the old hootie and the blowfish lead singer) who he has also been paired with. Either one would make for an awesome halftime! I know not everyone likes country music but, he is not just country, he is new age country with a mix of bluegrass and rock.
Really not a country fan but I think the genre is overdue a bit.
Honestly, i’d love to see Elton John tear it up old-school style.

This
I think a country halftime show is overdue.
Start out with a headliner, anyone popular, and turn it into a series of pairing.
Something like this:
Paisley to start
Paisley-Rucker
Paisley-Meyer
Paisley-someone older, famous, transgenerational
etc.

I like this idea
I think it’s a good idea to have artist’s who can cross genres somewhat. That’s why I think Rucker would be good idea as well as anyone like Aldean, Underwood, Adkins, Shelton…
and when you say
someone older, famous, transgenerationalhow can it be anyone other than George Strait? He’s been doing it since the early 80’s.

i like the whole idea of Willie
and new artists, that could include Paisley (he is the best country performer right now, IMO, tied with Keith Urban), maybe Keith Urban, and Darius Rucker… It also opens the door for bands like Bon Jovi, or Bret Michaels… since they play what is now, classic rock. I like this idea, in general, and I am not even a country fan. (as a guitar player-as i have mentioned- i have mad respect for all these guys.)

Actually, not at all. I don’t really listen to country, at all. I mean, I recognize some names, and a handful of songs, but only because of radio play, television, and/or women. Generally, I am a classic rock or “psychedelic rock” fan first. I would rather listen to “trip rock” as some call it (stoner rock to others). Give me some Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, NIN, or Dave/Tom Petty, any day. But, as a musician, my tastes vary, and I respect all artists, in some way. I don’t love them all… I just understand what kind of work/effort/passion that music requires. You need to be dedicated, to grow.

Boston! Plus - Someone Who Can SING The National Anthem
Boston is a great choice…BTW, kids, the replacement for the lead singer is a dead ringer (vocally) for the original. It would be a raucous, rockin’ show. You still have to placate us boomers, because we have all the money (LOL) BUT, Madonna is NOT it. Wow, that was poor.
As for “singing”…..I swear, the National Anthem is forever butchered by these so called “artists”. The original spin that everybody wants to pull on the song just doesn’t play. It’s NOT supposed to be sung that way…..it’s not country, it’s not the blues, it’s not rock….come on. Did they ever listen to the original??? Doug Allen, who does the Sabres games, would be an amazing choice, using his straight forward rendition. Nobody outside of Buffalo knows who he is, but, he does our National Anthem (and Canada’s) about as well as, anybody I have ever heard. Go with the standard, up tempo score. It ill be exciting to hear!!
Agreed
Like that guy who sings it before the Bears home games…that dude is for REAL!

Eric Clapton was born March 30, 1945. He will be 67 almost 68 at the time of the next SB. I am a fan of his too but I think perhaps someone a bit younger would be better.
I have no suggestions. I am one of the few that do not watch commercials or the halftime show. Football, kitchen or bathroom. In that order.

I would love to see these guys play the Super Bowl. Bring back Anthony and the Jack Daniels base along with Diamond Dave. Let Eddie amaze the crowd with some crazy solo’s and sit back and watch Alex do what he does best. I could see a set list of Running With the Devil, Ice Cream Man, Hot For Teacher, Jump, 10 seconds of that junk they just released and then close with Panama!!! Who wouldn’t get fired up to hear that!
I’ll get flammed for saying it but I think they were a much better band with Haggar. New album sounds tired, too.

I will stop now. There are a lot of great bands and singers, and I didn’t even list my fav’s b/c no one else would like them.

The 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show is kept ultra-secret. A surprise act will play. No one in the country knows who. Half Time arrives. All the lights shut off, the stage is erected in darkness, the lights slowly brighten, a huge black curtain covers the entire stage, and there is a hushed silence over the Superdome…
Suddenly, the curtain drops, and the music smashes in. There, in all their Muppetacious glory, holding their tiny rock and roll instruments, is the Nightmare, singing RIVERBOTTOM NIGHTMARE BAND!

The next Superbowl is at the SuperDome
So while I agree that Clapton is a Rock God and should have had his SB-Halftime Show, his time his past. No one wants another “The Who” performance at halftime. (As I say this please recognize that not many fans love The Who more than me, and I love classic rock just in general.)
I could get down with some of the suggestions. Cee Lo Green, The Police (before they get too old) and the Foo Fighters.
But what I’d really like to see is a production. Something that only the entire cast of Glee could do. Have your Lea Michelle solo, a dance number, a group number and an ending where Sue and the football team douse them all with Slushies at the end. I recognize that this will never happen (so the female leads of Glee will just have to dance around with Slushie drench shirts in my head) but that’s what I’d like to see.
Since it’s at the Super Dome, it should be Harry Connick Jr. If you (and anyone else here, for that matter) haven’t heard Star Turtle, you’re missing out. It’s easily one of my top 10 albums.
And Wynton Marsalis would be cool, too.

Pete is deaf from playing too loudly. He still has an amazing voice. So does Rodger, it’s just changed pitches over the years. He’s an accomplished theater performer now.

ha yea well I'm 17..
But, I went up to to Toronto to see the Watch The Throne concert. It was awesome. The show they put on had tons of effects. If you familiar with the album at all they trade off verses. So they had two stages on each side, which rose as they song went on, with all sorts of laser effects, it was pretty sweet. Obviously got to be a fan of that music. But Kanye West puts on an amazing show. and for Jay-Z is my favorite artist of any genre.
For music that most people would like I think Coldplay or Foo Fighters would be the best choice.

With rap/hip-hop it all depends on what artist you are listening to. Kanye West and Jay-Z have many great songs, either with a good beat, or just great lyrics. But if you are listening to something like Lil Wayne, its awful IMO. I think to many people are told the stuff on kiss98.5 is rap/hip hop and they don’t like it. But I don’t know if you can say you can’t even somewhat like songs like Empire State of Mind ft. Alicia Keys or Young Forever ft. Michael Hudson (both by Jay-Z).
With the 10th Pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the Buffalo Bills select Dont'a Hightower LB Alabama.
Jay-Z/ Kanye collaboration album
is pretty rock solid as well. I like TAT wasn’t much of a fan, until fairly recently. Always liked Dr. Dre and his whole relative camp, and only recently started to see the appeal of Biggy/Tupac etc… I am a much bigger fan of Jay-Z than really any other rapper. And, I am 32. if that matters. Pharrell too. Basically, I think Jay-Z recognizes talent. He did marry the hottest/most talented female artist in a couple decades. So, he is obviously doing some things right. (TWSS)

I can personally tell you when I saw his last concert in Buffalo, it was freaking amazing, everyone else that I knew that attended felt the same.
He’s a good singer, but even in his 60’s, he is an AMAZING lead guitarist. I thought he just might blow the roof off of the HSBC it was so loud from people cheering, during his guitar solo during I shot the sheriff.
It was amazing to see him play. I will always treasure that evening. An amazing concert.

I used to love Skid Row, same with Dream Theater. I have a friend who roadies for lots of bands. He worked with Maroon 5 and became friends with them before they were big. Well, he latched on with Megadeth and became Dave Mustaine’s tech. Came back to town and got a couple of us tickets to the festival they put on. I literally bumped into Mike Portnoy while hanging out in the band coral. Strangest way to meet someone famous. I was on stage the entire show for Dream Theater and Megadeth and got to experience (from sidestage) what they get to see night after night.

Dream Theater might be one of the best bands, that few really know about. Petrucci, is a guitar phenom. Of course, he locked himself in his room 9 hours a day after school, and just jammed out. He was one of the few guitarist to be using a 7 string guitar, way before Korn, or bands like that, ever did.

Who are some of these bands?
Never heard of Matthew Good, Nightwish, Within Temptation, & Blind Guardian. Any specific songs that best illustrate them?
I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.
Matthew Good is a Canadian rock singer, the other three are symphonic metal bands from Europe. If you want to check them out, I would suggest:
Matthew Good Band – Hello Time Bomb, Advertising On Police Cars
Matthew Good – Alert Status Red, Last Parade
Nightwish – Amaranth (newer lead singer), End of All Hope (older lead singer)
Within Temptation – The Howling, Faster
Blind Guardian – Sacred Worlds, Fly
Also, everything else by all of them is awesome ;)

They are great bands. You just gave me some new favorites. Thanx dude. WT’s Angels, Our solemn hour and truth beneath the rose are amazing. Just breathtaking. And she’s hot.
Nightwish are good too. Their rendition of Phantom of the opera is nuts. And the new lead singer is hot. The video for bye bye beautiful is really cool. That might be the best break up song I have ever heard, ever!!!

You might maybe get THAT sense from my posts too, if you looked at it that way. Most people think my questions are some kind of attack. But I suspect sometimes their defensiveness is a clear representation of a lack of confidence in their view, or an unwillingness to remain open to other views. But then, I clearly enjoy debate, and prefer the Socratic Method, so to understand the viewpoint of my fellow debater.

YourYou’re very confident in your comments regarding your opinion and ideas of what is right or wrong. Funny you say "majority(most) people think my questions are a attack" yet you fail to see the irony in that.
You forget “And they all stink.”
As far as what you see as “ironty” well, i get it. That was why i made the comment in the first place. Clearly, you are either not as familiar with Socrates, and his method of discovering truth, as I am. As I already said, some people mistake a question of their view, as a question of THEM as people. That is a mistake that THEY make. Not me. I simply ask questions, to better understand, and to make an educated assessment of their view, before I suggest an alternative view. Some people can’t handle this process (lack of patience, defensive) some people assume I am being a jerk (especially after they are rude), and some people, carry on perfectly normal conversations with me.
Since I am the only common factor, I have to assume the variable is the other person, and if SOME can handle my approach, and others can’t… Then either they don’t appreciate my view, my approach, or my attitude. On that note: I personally, don’t expect disrespect, and won’t tolerate it. I won’t just stand idly by to an attack either. If that makes me abrasive (i think it makes me a man, and a typical human being) then, so be it. I really don’t need any more friends, I have plenty. Also, plenty of people respect my view, and value it. That is good enough for me. You can’t please everybody, as they also say.

The problem is clear TRT.....
I hate interject, but I’ve followed a couple of these related threads over the past few days, and want to say something. Try to accept this without biting my head off. There is a clear reason you are experiencing negative attitude towards some of your posts. You are very unnecessarily condescending to almost anyone that doesn’t agree with you. Here’s an example of what I mean: you take the time to correct someone’s grammatical mistake, yet you make an error yourself, right in your second sentence.
I think it’s this kind of thing that turns people off. You blame others for being defensive, yet you are completely oblivious to your own defensiveness. You want to come across as highly intelligent, and I am in no way questioning your intelligence….but for some reason it just comes off as rude. You want, and expect respect, but you seem very unwilling to give any. No one is infallible. Especially someone posting in the comments section of a Buffalo Bills blog.
As buffalobacker states, food for thought.

I disagree. Correcting a mistake is only going to be construed as an insult to some. If buffalobacker wants to address this, let him. We have shared in mutual respect both arguments, and laughs. I appreciate your point, but I generally disagree. I give the same respect, that I am given.

Fair enough.
As far as the respect issue, I was referring to much more content than the simple grammar correction, and more exchanges that I’ve seen here on BR than that brief one between you and buffalobacker. That was merely an example. I just think the abrasiveness can be construed as hostility to some….and sometimes it’s easy to overlook when you might be being abrasive. I’m guilty of it quite often myself.
I do appreciate your candor, and your convictions. I enjoy a good debate myself. You are a prolific poster to these boards, while I usually post much more randomly, so I’m in no position to start calling people out (which really wasn’t my intention anyhow) . I just find that it’s often easier to have a lively, productive discussion when you don’t come at someone full throttle. Many people have difficulty with such an approach.

Agree, and I appreciate your view. Hopefully by “prolific” you not only mean abundant; but also fruitful. If not, I still take no offense. As I have received warning regarding my discussions regarding “getting along”; I have no further comment. I just hope to be given the benefit of the doubt, on occasion at least, moving forward.

As long as Creed plays nothing off of Human Clay or Weathered, I’m in for that group. I was/am a huge grunge fan.

i like grunge too
but my friends and I have a running joke that most of the bands that came out after these few, were just cheap knockoffs, being driven by record companies trying to hang on to an era that had already come and gone.

That’s true for most…Candlebox being an awesome exception.

i really liked Candlebox for the most part.
and there are a handful of other exceptions too. I personally went the route of “psychodelic rock”(?) with bands like Faith No More, Tool, APC, Puscifer (I think Maynard is awesome, can you tell?), Mr Bungle, Peeping Tom. Foo Fighters have always been a staple of mine as well (and incubus) because I was mostly introduced to music via Nirvana, and NIN.
it was a natural progression for me, as Led Zeppelin is my all time favorite band, and these bands were all heavily influenced by their eclectic and versatile approach to music.
I also listened to a bunch of Dave Matthews/Pink Floyd too, at that time during post grunge.

Rec!
Candlebox’s “Rain” is one of my favorites! That album is on my “Deserted Island” list!

U2 played halftime right after 9/11. It was amazing. It was also the first Super Bowl the Patriots won.

Foo Fighters
They are a current and very popular rock band but they have been around for a while now and just about everyone has heard several of their songs. I think they would be a good choice.
The Beets!
Great Halftime Show Material.
Set List:
Killer Tofu!
Where’s My Sock?

“Doug” was an early 90s Nickelodeon children’s cartoon. Doug Funny’s favorite band was The Beets. Surprisingly, they kicked @$$

They should stay away from people who have been washed up for 15 years or more and stay away from niche bands. Those two combined pretty much excludes every rock band ever. And if they want quality, they’ll have to stay away from most pop singers. And they have to be tame enough that the grannies wont get their panties in a bunch. But still good. And keep in mind a very high level of fame is required to headline the Superbowl halftime show.
So plug this into the machine here and it looks like the best option is…
Jennifer Hudson
By this standard...
it wouldn’t have been MADONNA. Though, that show, wasn’t the worst thing i have seen at halftime,by any means. and, as a hetero male, in his 30’s… it wasn’t my “cup of tea” per say. But it was tolerable and the stages/props/dancing (dude on that wire was crazy and dancing around on those bleachers looked pretty hard) were pretty elaborate and cool.

Yeah Madonna was a bad choice. Hasn’t been relevant for ages. But what I find more obnoxious is the idea that TRUE football fans should be catered to by only booking classic rock as if TRUE football fans are 40+ year old men exclusively.
i think they were trying to appease the new women audience too, as I note above.

Not a huge Madonna fan
But, that comment is false. She has never stopped being relevant. She had a hit CD just a few years back. She made a duet with Justin timbereverywhere. 4 min or something like that. I watch a top 20 show to keep track of what is new in the music world b/c radio blows today and that song was everywhere.
I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.
Foo fighters would be a nice choice
So would cede lo green, and Id even like to see Metallica, the police or AC/DC but my dark horse candidate is none other than
THE KILLERS!!
I think they rock and most people have no idea what they’re singing about they just know it sounds good.
Another strong candidate nobody mentioned
LINKIN PARK
I saw them live in Toronto last year and they kicked ass.
