Would You.......
The NFL is always different week to week. Some random thoughts to have the bloggers chew on.
Would you give Randy Moss a chance? If he still has the 4.3 speed I say yes for a 3 year deal for about 12 million. This would be broken down to 1 million in base salaries and 3 million in incentives each season. One Million signing bonus. The last year of the deal would be 500K in salary and 1.5 in incentives.
Would you go after Mario Williams? I say no because he just would cost too much. He is an amazing talent but we cannot afford him.
Would you go after Desean Jackson, Vincent Jackson, or Dwayne Bowe? My gut feeling is go after Vincent and Dwayne. We need at least one of them or both depending on if we get Stevie signed. I could also see us drafting a burner in the draft to develop.
Who would you go after for an offensive tackle? The top ones that I have read about are not to unfamiliar. Jared Gaither and our very own Demetrius Bell. I say we sign Bell before Stevie. Gaither is a only a desperate fall back. The draft is always on option.
In looking at the draft I have looked at the Drafttek online simulator and the laid out an awesome draft for us.
1st - Zach Brown - OLB - UNC
2nd - Andre Branch - DE - Clemson
3rd - A.J. Jenkins - WR - Illinois
4th a - Ladarius Green - TE - Louisiana- Lafayette
4th b - Brock Osweiler - QB - ASU
5th - Omar Bolden - CB - ASU
6th - James Cameron - OT - Mississippi State
7th - DeAngelo Tyson - DT - Georgia
This draft would be great. I do not think Osweiler will go that late but if he did he would be a steal.
Let me know your thoughts.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

pretty sure
DeSean Jackson is going to franchised…I think I remember reading something on PFT to that effect.
Avil or Mathis or Calais Campbell and Bowe
I don’t think Osweiler will be available in the 4th. A few sights are saying he could go as early as the late 1st round early 2nd.
Why cant we afford Mario?
Where is our money tied that we cant afford him. Will he want to come here… i dont know. But we have more than enough to afford him.
Shun the non Billievers!
I wouldn’t – but I do think the team I root for should. Former number one overall, just entering his prime, now with NFL experience, at a position of dire need? I’d want them to spend $15M a year on him if they had to.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his contract went to $20M+. I think people are going to go crazy with bidding on him.
per year you mean?
i think closer to 12-15 probably. Still will be 4 or 5 years, for over 60 million. That’s my guess at least.

Yup. I meant per year. There are several teams that have a lot of cap room and they have stated that they are going to be more active in free agency this year. I think he will be the number one target of a lot of teams.
i agree. i just don't know if he would collect more than a Franchise QB commands.

If enough teams are desperate enough or if enough teams are actively bidding, I can easily see it reaching 17-18 M per season. There aren’t a lot of good pass rushers in the league. Mario Williams is a 6’4" or 6’5 (? Someone will have to check me on that) and 290 Lbs. And he is fast. The man is an athletic freak. He could probably snap Brady like a twig with two fingers. :) . That by itself is almost worth the money.
cool. i disagree.
that is an awful lot of money. When the likes of Tom Brady, Michael Vick, Sam Bradford, and now Peyton Manning (after a re-negotiation of his newest deal probably) don’t make 20 a year, that is crazy to me. Dumervil and Seymour are around 15… so I could MAYBE see how Mario will get more (reaching your lowered 17-18 projection), but I don’t see it as a forgone conclusion. I think he will get offered a good amount of guaranteed money, but not given that kind of money, automatically. Remember he is coming back from a torn pectoral muscle, and while his demand will surely drive his cost up, no way he gets more money than Tom Brady, or Vick, or Manning, even as a former 1st overall pick himself. Maybe I am wrong. It happens.

Yeah, I don’t think so…honestly. There’s no way a team pays him more than the best QBs in the league. Just because a team has more money, doesn’t mean they want to irresponsibly spend it all on one player. Teams will do what they can to get him at a realisticly high figure. No way he makes that kind of money after what Haynesworth did to Washington.

Sure we can afford him now.
We need to sign Stevie, a #2 WR, a LDE, a CB, and resign Fred. Then there is Levitre, Byrd, and D Nelson to be resigned before this time next year. We could afford him but we would have to scale back at #2WR and CB this year and we might have to lose one of our pending FA’s for next year to do it. IMO it is not worth it. I would rather aim at Avril, and still be able to get better quality at other positions this year and resign all of our FA’s next year.

Mario's never had a 10 sack season
on top of that he spent most last season on IR so he is a injury risk . ten to twelve large for that risk … not if it was my say . I’d sign Stevie , Bell , and Chandler keeping the chemistry in tact .
Not only has Williams had a 10 sack season, but he actually averaged 10 sacks per year over the first five years of his career and that includes a rookie season with just 4.5 sacks. He’s got 53.5 sacks in 82 career games which is a 10.5 sack per 16 game average. Take out that rookie year and it jumps up to 12 sacks per full season.
He tore a pec last year, I wouldn’t say that makes him anymore of an injury risk than any other player in the league. How many players have actually been in the NFL for six years and not ended up on IR at some point. Even in missing 11 games last year, he’s only missed 14 of 96 possible NFL games.
"You mean @TWHITNER. It’s how he prefers to be referenced." - Jon Harrington
He has graded out as one of the top pass rushers in the league for years.
Mario’s never had a 10 sack season
His high # of sacks in a year is 14 in 2007
But sacks don’t tell the whole story, hurries and hits combined with sacks give a much better number towards how good a pass rusher is.
Hits are good even if you don’t get a sack, as the hits pile up in a game, most QBs get more timid and offer opportunities for fumbles.. Hurries throw off timing that can lead to picks.
A hurried pass that leads to a pick, usually helps your team much more than a sack.
ten to twelve large for that risk
If you think that is gonna get it done to sign Mario Williams, think again. Two years ago Julius Peppers got a 6 year 90 Million Contract. Mario Williams is even younger, just entering his prime and will command minimum 10 million more than Peppers got.
I can almost guarantee if Mario Williams hits the FA market, he will become the highest paid defensive player in NFL history

Randy Moss is a Ten+ Year Veteran – $820,000 is the veteran minimum for him.
.
When the job is finished no one remembers how long it took, just how well it was performed.

I would pass on Moss, and Haynseworth as well.(just realesed by TB)
I also agree Williams is to expesive for my blood. I would like a big time player there though.
Just a thought, I know we get knocked around a lot for being a bad place to come for FA’s but if I was a LDE I would want to go some where that I could perform so that my next contract would be big as well. Very few teams looking for a LDE have a DT combo as good as Dareus, and K Williams. It could be just the edge we need to help us get a productive player.

Would you pick up ....
London Fletcher for a one year deal?
Fat, Drunk, & Stupid is No way to go through life.
I would
Not sign Moss. Even if he runs a 4.2. I don’t doubt his athleticism, even at this age. Well I can’t until I’m shown otherwise. But I sincerely doubt that he would fit in with the rest of the locker room. No one player is worth losing the rest of the locker room over. Despite his abilities.
I wouldn’t sign Desean Jackson or Bowe for similar reasons. Their motivation is too volatile. I don’t see them as true professionals who understand their jobs on the team and go out there and execute week in and out. When they’re on, they’re amazing. But they’re just as likely to be dedicated as they are to be pouting about something (contract, throw me the ball, etc etc).
I would go after Vincent Jackson. Yes he held out with the Chargers. But he did that in a “agree to disagree” professional kind of way. When he came back, you never heard any quibbling on or off the field from him. He made his point. He lost his point. But that didn’t change how he played the game. He’s obviously talented and I think he would be a great veteran presence to have in the locker room. I think you get a lot out of paying a guy like Vincent jackson vs. Desean or Dwayne Bowe.
I’m on the fence on whether I would go after Mario Williams. It depends on A) his health and B) whether I think he can single handedly turn our pass rush around. He’s obviously very talented and regardless of what scheme we run he seems to be a fit. He’s played in a 4-3 and a 3-4 and done well in both, so if we run the hybrid I can’t think of a better player to go after on defense. But it will all come down to $$$, as it often does. This is a team void on talent. They’ve put together some pieces but we’re many starters away from becoming a consistent winner. I’m not sure I’d throw in all my chips into Mario Williams – and from the looks of it that’s what it’s going to take. Tampa Bay just rolled over all of its free cap space from 2011 to 2012 and reportedly will have over $60 M in free cap space to sign free agents AND their GM just came out and said they will be very active in free agency. With teams like that and the usual suspects (WAS, DAL etc), its going to be a seller’s market in free agency and if we somehow land Mario Williams chances are we won’t be making too many other moves with top tier players.
I think I’d rather spend my money on some guy like Cliff Avril and supplement that with one or two more pass rushers in the draft and/or low level free agent and save my money for Vincent Jackson.
If they got Mario Williams and no one else, i’d be ecstatic. It’d be like buying a Bugatti Veyron instead of twenty Nissan GTRs.

Someone will pay Mario
Every good team has someone with a big contract like Mario will get, he deserves it
If we want to win we need to pay good players
Cut Mcgee and Dwan Edwards

hahaha. definitely. Nothing wrong with going after it, once in a while. Especially in one of the most competitive businesses/industries… umm…. IN THE WORLD!!! Not gonna build a championship team, being a weeny.

I know Jim Kelly has been very vocal with concerns over the lack of a pass rush.

cool
I could care less about Jim Kelly. That guy is so far from relevant, I really don’t have much regard for his hopes. If he becomes the owner, at some point, maybe then his perspective might mean something to me. Fact is though at this point, he is somewhere between a has been, and a never was. HOF or not.

That’s a good one, not gonna lie.
But, I have been pretty clear on not being in love with Jim Kelly. I have had personal dealings with the guy, my Dad held a yearly benefit with the guy, and he is regularly a jerk. That is putting it REALLY nicely. You can love him as a fan if you want. To me, he is irrelevant, until he becomes somehow relevant.

Have you been around him recently? He supposedly has changed. And that is from people that have been around him for a while.
about a month ago, i talked with a friend of his
and heard similar. doesn’t mean that I think his view is significant. I mean, the comment was:
“I know Jim Kelly has been very vocal with concerns over the lack of a pass rush.”
Can you name a Bills fan who ISN’T concerned with the pass rush? What makes him special? Because, you don’t need to have played in the NFL to recognize our pass rush has been TERRIBLE for a really, really long time. I mean, I respect he has a view (though I have no expectation that anyone around here believes this), and that it matches up with EVERYONE else’s. I don’t see how it has relevance. For any future reference, I don’t care what Thurman Thomas has to say either. He too, is little more than an arrogant jerk. If you don’t agree: read about how he thinks he is better than Emmitt, because Emmitt had a better line. Nothing like showing repect to your former teammates for leading him into the playoffs, the AFC Championship, AND the friggin Super Bowl, for an NFL record 4 consecutive years, and then throwing them under the bus, for not being acknowledged as the best RB in all time, becuase….. oh yeah, he isn’t.

Jim Kelly
Why would anyone but family or lover be in love with Jim Kelly? You call Jim a jerk yet your Dad holds benefits with him. His relevance regarding playing Bill’s football is clear, i could careless about his purported jerkiness, new word. He is relevant to those that follow Bill’s history and team. Jim kelly was paid to play not be nice to you. Sorry, but his personality isn’t relevant to this blog.

Did. They don’t anymore. Not for almost 10 years now.
Sorry, but his personality isn’t relevant to this blog.
I never said it was. I simply said that I don’t have to respect his common view, simply because he played here 20 years ago. I don’t respect the man, and i don’t see how is view has any more relevance than anyone else, regarding the lack of pass rush on the team.
As I asked before:
