Buffalo Bills Off-season Free Agency Outlook/Additions

This is my first post it would be nice to get a lot of feedback everybody. Thank You in advance

OK so first off with our own free agents. I believe that Stevie Johnson will resign with the Buffalo Bills. The organization would me out of their minds to let him get away. JUST PAY HIM!!! Next I believe Demetrius Bell and Scott Chandler should be resigned, also since we are back in the 4-3 Bryan Scott. You gotta keep the core players so that we can build on last season, keep that strong team chemistry. Everyone knows that we need to address the pass rush it is the teams biggest weakness. We can't hope for Merriman to show up. Everyone is hoping the Bills go after Mario Williams as am I, but if he fails I would have the Bills strongly consider Cliff Avril. He thrived in a defense with Suh, Fairley, and Van Den Bosh. I really believe we could attract both players Avril and Williams with the idea of one of them lining up with Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus. Either one would make our D-Line look really good with Chris Kelsay on the other side and having Merriman come in for Kelsay on passing downs.

As for my next free agency need I would have to go with wide receiver even if and when Stevie Johnson is resigned. I look at Vincent Jackson as the teams number 1 receiver target. He has ties with Buddy Nix who drafted him. He would compliment Johnson really well and instantly make our offense top 5 in the league next year. If not him then Dwayne Bowe for the same reasons. But if the Bills know they have no shot with either 1 look for them to target guys like Robert Meachem, Marques Colston, Mario Manningham(who I think will resign with the Giants), and Brandon Lloyd. These guys could also fill the void at receiver. Nix did say he wants to get a guy who is open when their not open.

I also think we need to add another corner to spice up the competition at the position. Stanford Routt is a good start with him coming in for a visit. Another guy I would look at is Cortland Finnegan, he is a very good cover corner.

We also need another outside LB. I would look at either Stephen Tulloch or Phillip Wheller.

Let me know what you guys think about this post.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Talk about trading Fred Jackson – that should work.

Also, I hope they resign Stevie and try to get Bowe. That would be awesome

Nice post Giovanni !!!

As far as the WRs go, I would love the Bills to get Brandon Lloyd.
I love that guy’s game. He is a hard worker, a producer, and a beast.

But, I think its already predestined that he goes to the Pats (Dammit!!) because of his love for Joshy and the Pats have the cap space to do it.

though at points, i have commented on all these;

Colston Meachem Manningham – yes

Bowe Jackson Lloyd – no.

Finnegan – HELL NO

Williams – keep dreaming

Chandler Steve – get the signed.

Avril Routt – don’t care either way. That probably says something about them.

Finnegan is a better cover corner than any that we have, and I really believe the Bills will go after Vincent Jackson because of his connection.

i will disagree emphatically.

he would be little more than a cancer here. Luckily, it is really of no concern to me, because he will be looking to go to a “contender” as many share your view about his abilities. I personally, would keep Reggie Corner, or Leodis for a decade, before having Cortland for a snap.

seriously.

one of the classiest players in the league (Andre Johnson) got drawn into a fight with the guy. THAT speaks VOLUMES for what a scumbag Cortland is. I don’t need to be reading about how Cortland breaks Steve Johnson’s nose, or kicks Dareus or decides to go and stab somebody. I don’t see ANY positive reason to bring him. NONE.

Agree with you 100% on Finnegan. I absolutely hate that guy’s attitude and I don’t want him anywhere near Buffalo. I do think you are selling Avril short. He would instantly upgrade our pass rush (which, admittedly, isn’t saying a whole lot) and open up our options in the draft. It’s pretty much agreed upon that we need multiple additions at DE. Avril would be a great place to start.

Rout

was one of the most penalized corners in the league (Drayton Florence anyone?) but great post, loved it.

i hate to break it to you, but the bills arent going sign 4 big name free agents this offseason (as in, some combination of the names u listed at those 4 spots). it absolutely will not happen.

id more expect them to do what theyve been doing: fill 1 or 2 spots with approx. $15-20 millionish contracts, and look for everything else in the draft.

what has buddy nix (or the bills, for that matter) ever done to make you think theyd end up signing, say: bowe, avril, routt, and tulloch?

furthermore, i dont actually think all those free agent signings would really help the team. the best teams are almost unanimously pieced together thru the draft. the teams that make the big splash signings all the time (raiders, cowboys, redskins, eagles) toil in mediocrity while teams that draft and coach extremely well (packers, steelers) continue to be the cream of the crop.

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

Also

If they signed 4 big time free agents as this post suggests, what will the salary cap look like? Again, this isn’t madden and you can’t just get 4 giant names like this and fit the cap. We might have cap room, but, some teams have (I think I read this right) 60 MILLION in cap room. They are the ones that can sign the crazy deals this year.

I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.

Nice post, Giovanni.

WR: While Bowe or Jackson would be nice (AFTER re-signing Johnson) I think Garcon or Meachem would be fine.
RDE: No way do I see the Bills entering and winning a bidding war for a superstar. Much more likely (and productive) to sign a 2nd/3rd tier FA: Anthony Spencer.
CB: If not Stanford Routt then someone similar. In addition to re-signing most of their own internal FAs, I would color the 2012 Buffalo Bills as done dealing with FA. On to the draft… (and count yourself a lucky fan if they got this much done in FA).

I think you live in a dream world Giovani!

Don’t get me wrong, I love your list but you basically are suggesting that OBD go out and get the top FAs at each position of need – Ain’t going to happen my friend!

If OBD can either get vJax or Avril – Then Free Agency will have been a huge success IMO, getting both will be like Christmas in March!

I would not want to touch Manningham with a 10 foot pole. Does the guy have physical talent, yes. Is he smart, NO! He continuously makes rookie mistakes even after so many years in the league, I really don’t want that in Buffalo. Did he make a fantastic catch in the SB, yes but how many idiotic errors did he commit before that catch? At least 2-3. In a tight game opportunities don’t come often so you can’t waste them on an idiot receiver not knowing how to run his route properly! My best friend is a huge Giants fan and he is hoping that Manningham leaves this off season, that says a lot!

I like Bowe as well. I also think that d.Jax would be a perfect compliment to Stevie, I’d be wiling to take a chance on him maturing but his multiple concussions make him a scary prospect given his diminutive stature.

Rebuilding a team properly takes time and patience

Ok what I will say is this. The receiver need will definitely be adressed in free agency we need a veteran receiver. Never said we would land these players but I do believe the Bills will go after some of them. More specifically speaking V. Jackson or Meachem or Avril and Mathis

by smartgiovanni123 on Feb 17, 2012 1:19 PM EST reply actions

Colston

He seems to fit the description that Nix gave in the beginning. I can’t see jackson because he is too old.

Meachem wouldn’t be bad either.

I hope we add either one WR, DE or WR, LB

I just want to find out now!

Here's what I think the outcome will be

1. Bills sign Stevie. 4 year deal for 8.5 million average.
2. Bell is FA, signed by Vikings for 6 million/year.
3. Chandler signed by Chicago, 3 year $10 million deal.
4. Bills sign both their RFA’s (Urbik, Reinhart) with fans complaining about the numbers being too high.
4. Bills pick up a CB – probably Grimes, Porter or Routt.
5. Bills pick up another CB off waiver wire – a marginal one but young – to replace Corner.
6. No high profile signings at DE. Maybe Roth or Biermann.
7. V-Jax signs with SD again for $9.5 million/year.

i hope not

but i wouldn’t be surprised. im holding out hope that they do make a big signing (williams, or more realistically, avril) just to say "see? we said we’d be aggressive and look who we got. and then they go about business as usual. i really hope they do more than this, but we’ll see.
