Franchise Tag An Option For Stevie Johnson, Says Buddy Nix
In the ongoing drama stemming from the Buffalo Bills' attempt to re-sign free agent wide receiver Stevie Johnson prior to the start of free agency, it had been widely reported and long assumed that the Bills were not interested in placing the franchise tag on their top wideout if a long-term deal could not be reached. GM Buddy Nix, however, has no idea where that thought process came from.
"You know everything's an option," Nix told WGR 550's Joe Buscaglia on Friday at the 2012 NFL Combine. "I read in the paper or somebody sent it to me the other day that we definitely were not going to tag him. I don't know who they talked to, I'd like to talk to them maybe see what we're gonna do with some of those other guys. So I don't know who the source was but they don't know, I can promise you that. Again, that's an option we've got until March 5 to decide."
Members of the Bills' front office, including Nix, will be meeting with Johnson's agent this afternoon to negotiate face-to-face, according to several reports.

I thought it was kind of odd
That they’d just come out and say ‘no we’re not going to do that’s. O guess they didn’t. There’s liars afoot.

It WAS odd.
It made no sense. The franchise tag is the biggest weapon the Bills had to persuade Stevie to sign before Free Agency.

It’s possible the media may be stirring the pot. Putting the ball in OBD’s court so as not to lose Stevie at any cost. It’s also possible that Buddy Nix is lying here.

Damn your reasoning!
Jk, here’s my thing though:
Say hypothetically Stevie didn’t want to be here, or it was evident that no long-term deal was going to happen. Why then, wouldn’t the Bills tag Stev13, and then trade him, to at least get somethinvg for him instead of absolutely nothing? Franchise tagged players can be traded, right? I guess that would make too much sense..

Im not sure how much value he would be return
But, yes that’s an option
Please, Buddy Nix, recognize Michael Floyd's talent..

It’s also possible Stevie’s agent is the one who told the media the Bills wouldn’t use the franchise tag.

I always presume...
…that any reporter who says that a sports team is going to do something without naming the source within the organization is fabricating the story. Teams really should start taking a harder line against reporters that publish rumors that they themselves create as fact.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
as a former journalism major (my first major which ultimately became communications/radio broadcast)
I agree as well. The first things we learned were the code of ethics involved in reporting, and the difference between information with a source, and fabricating rumor.
“Reporting” on celebrities was taboo in the news as well. Now even evening news reports comment on public figures (outside of politics which is of course expected “news”) almost as often as the weather.

One of the golden rules essentially boils down to “if you can’t name the source, don’t use the info” This has been completely thrown out the window in sports reporting, especially by the guys at ESPN.

This is good news. The Bills already need a #2 WR, so if they lost Johnson, they would need both a #1 and #2 WR’s.

Why pay him 9.5 this year
and end up paying him like 9 a year after next year when you could pay him 8 a year now.

It's a last resort.
We’re not all begging for Stevie to be tagged. I’m sure all us fans would like to see Stevie re-sign willingly to a fair deal. But, if Stevie’s representation refuses to agree to terms, some of us (myself included) believe that using the franchise tag to prevent him from testing the market is a good idea. So it costs us more than we’d like in 2012. They can then get right to work on extending him to a multiyear contract for more reasonable money before free agency in 2013.

If he is asking for 10 or 11 a season… Not saying he is, but the tag can definitely be used as leverage by a team. Players want the big signing bonus and financial security. It can be more effectively used on running backs that wear out faster than wr’s, but the prospect of Stevie blowing a knee out and missing out on a big pay day next year will have some influence.
GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!
You gotta figure the leverage involved with the tag. So lets say the Bills are holding out two options for SJ -
A 5 yr 35 million contract with 15 mill guaranteed (I think that’s probably something in the ball park of the going rate)
In the other hand they have the franchise tag.
SJ has a choice – 5 yr with 15 mil in the pocket, with potential for 35 mil or he can take the tag, making 9.5 this year and hope to have a career season that will raise either maintain or raise his market value for when he hits free agency next year.
Here is the problem – Football is hazardous to your health, and past performance does not guarantee future results. What if he gets, say, a high ankle sprain in week 1, and limps to 800 yards (he’s not doing juking to 1000 yards on a bum ankle, aside from all the other knocks on his game, like lack of elite speed). Now his market value is going to be less than what it is right now. Maybe then he can hope for a 20 mil 4 yr contract with 7.5 mil guaranteed.
I don’t know. Forced to choose, I’d have to think long and hard about the offer the Bills are putting on the table right now. Maybe SJ is more confident than I am.

No doubt – I want to be in SJ’s shoes right now. But we’re not talking about an ordinary dude, here – not all millionaires are created equal. Some just have one million. Others have hundreds of millions. He’s not comparing himself to stiffs like us. His peers are floating in the stratosphere that’s who he’s comparing himself to.

There are thoughts that it actually works out in the team’s best interest in the long run, and they won’t be spending much more money at all. Also, as others have stated, it’s a negotiating tactic. If he gets hurt this year without a long term deal, sucks for him.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
Of course it's an option
It would be crazy for the Bills to take the tag off the table since it costs them nothing (if they tag Stevie but don’t want to pay him $9.4 million in 2012 they can always waive him before the season starts). By tagging him they put pressure on him to do a long-term deal, since he would no longer be a FA. Or, if they can’t get a deal done with him, they could try to trade him and at least get a draft pick even if they are going to lose him.
All of this is a perfect illustration of why we should not pay any attention to the stories that appear in the media about the status of contract negotiations. Sure, the Bills and Stevie are “far apart” right now. What would you expect? If they were close together they would have a deal done in no time. Both sides are surely sticking to their negotiating positions at the moment, which probably means they differ by about $2 million. It’s possible they may never be able to meet in the middle, but the fact that they are not close now means nothing, zilch, zero.
no fa wr's
Have signed a contract yet, they are all doing the same thing.

Tag Him
They should just use the Tag on him because the other free agents to be are not worth the tag(Bell,Scott,Morrison)so BLo pay him the 9.5 for the season and work a deal during the season. We got the money to pay him and still have enough to get the rookies signed and still get at-least two or three players from free agency. BLo is way under the cap and they need to start spending it since we did get approved for a carryover from last season cap.I could understand if BLo was cap strapped but there not so they got no excuses.Give the Fans what they want which is a good product for 2012 and start spending on our so called Stars of the team.Go BLo!!!

Tag You're It
Would be the perfect headline if he is franchised in my opinion.
sigh.....
How has this deal not been finalized already? The Buffalo News said today:
“Just how close the Bills will be willing to get to an $8 million a year figure for Johnson remains to be seen. That’s the figure that would equal last year’s “roughly comparable” free-agent signee, Sidney Rice of Seattle. Obviously the BIlls have not been willing to get there so far."
Stevie’s asking for 8 mil a year? New York City newspapers are reporting that the Giants dont want to match Mario Manningham’s 7 mil per year and the Bills think 8 mil is something they have to negotiate down from? YIKES. Give me a friggin break. 8 mil is VERY fair. What the hell is the hold up Buddy Nix??
Sidney Rice has had only one 1,000 yard season and 4 others below 500 yards. Hes never cracked double digit touchdowns in a season. Mario Manningham has never had a 1,000 yard season and has never cracked double digit touchdowns. Stevie has two back to back in his ONLY two seasons with significant playing time with 10 and 7 touchdowns. If the Bills cant see that letting this drama fester is bad for the lockeroom , bad for business, and utterly silly considering what Stevie is reportedly asking for than I have no response but to throw my hands up in the air. I mean what??? This guy is your 50 million dollar QBs BEST FRIEND on the field. Hes the face of the franchise, the fans love him and hes young and consistent already.
And before responders say this should wait until we see what happens with the afternoon conversation, look what the Buffalo News quoted Buddy as saying about that meeting:
Bills General Manager Buddy Nix today reiterated his desire to retain Johnson. But he also said he does not expect a major breakthrough when the team meets with Johnson’s agent later today. "We’ll try to get the gap a little closer and keep working on it," Nix said. “I doubt very seriously we’ll see a change much after today’s meeting. … We’re meeting with his agent but we’re doing the same thing with 20 some agents, as we always do.”
Well thats a winning attitude to bring to a negotiation. Even if the Bills do resign Stevie, saving the million dollars in cap wont be worth the damage to Stevie and the locker room. YUCK
Rant over.

The first article you quoted does not say that Stevie is asking for $8 Million. They just said that $8 Million is what Sidney Rice got. I think it is their conjecture that Stevie wants something similar, but I don’t see any proof supporting the truthfulness of that conjecture.

Agreed. The point being that we don't know what the sticking points are.
Is it length of contract? Is it guaranteed money? Is it milestone payments (option clauses)? Is it incentive escalators?
These larger deals are usually completed just before FA. Neither side will want to start moving too much until the deadline is approaching.

if what you say is true
then Stevies agent has been playing the media like an expert and should have a larger client base soon. According to most reports I’ve seen, citing “league sources” (admittedly vague) Stevie has a number he’s offered to the Bills a while ago and it appears to be reasonable. That would have given he and the Bills plenty of time to work on all of those nuances given that the media seems to be saying Stevie very badly wants to be here.
Either the Bills aren’t reciprocating or Stevies agent is painting a hell of a picture to make the Bills look bad – and dont get me wrong, Im not being sarcastic, that very well could be the case.
This even grates my passive cheese - LeClaire Bill
I think you're instincts about Stevie's agent are correct. He's likely just trying to gain a bit of leverage.
Let me ask you this…When was the last time you heard OBD say ANYTHING about a contract, signed or not?
I’d be willing to bet almost anything that the real issues have to do with the first 3 years salary and guaranteed money, not per year averages. Agents and players know they won’t see the end of these large deals, that’s why they want all the cash they can in the first 3 years (and I don’t blame them).

Unless OBD is worried that Stevies production is tied to Chan, I think hes young enough that giving him money up front wouldnt be that much of a risk. By all accounts hes just now entering his prime and that should last through the contract. Odds are Stevie, if his play stays solid, will be in line for another big payday before his career is up. But guaranteed money could be a sticking point.
All we’ve heard from Nix is that he didnt think any progress would be made on the Stevie front and even if Stevies agent is playing games here, Im surprised the Bills havent done a better job communicating through the media themselves.

At the least it's unprofessional
that the GM of the team is quoted like that, sounding almost closeminded to any progress that could come from meeting with a player’s agent. I mean, what kind of thing is that to say publically before a big business meeting with a client or perspective employee in which the two sides are trying to make a business deal or agreement?
And at the most it’s could be taken as insulting….like saying “I don’t even know why were meeting, I know the Bills sure as hell won’t be making any concessions to get our player signed…” If you are Stevie and you read that, don’t you question just how much of a priority it is to the team that an agreement is reached? That quote doesn’t sound like Buddy Nix is determined tobring his best WR back at all.
I’m really surprised at that quote.

I agree that it sounded unprofessional...
but it could be Buddy downplaying how bad he wants Stevie back so as to not weaken his negotiation position. If he acts like the meeting is a waste of his time, it may compel Stevie’s people to make concessions to get a deal done so that the meeting isn’t a waste of time.

and he should not be paid like one. So, tag him, and package him, our #1 this year and our #1 next year and ship them to St. Louis for the second pick in this year’s draft. Select RG, III. Receivers are much easier to come by than are franchise quality QBs. Pick up some good FA..Meacham, or Garcon, if not Jackson or Bowe; draft s shifty slot receiver and give Easley and Aiken a real shot to be the #2.

“The two sides are getting closer, they have submitted counter proposals”
“The are not going to use the franchise tag”
“The two sides are still very far away”
How can we possibly know what is true?
Ralph just needs to quit already and we hope a wealthy man buys this team and spends bucks to win.

And you came to this conclusion based on the fact that the franchise tag for Stevie Johnson is not off the table.

I have no idea what Ralph would have to do with these negotiations. He’s probably sleeping on his couch in Detroit.

Boy you really like to imagine things and then get angry and jealous because of those imaginations. How do you know what his lifestyle is like? Maybe he doesn’t even really spend his money that much. We don’t know.
What on earth??!!

Where are you getting this? Me and Xavier had a tiny itty bitty little joke there.. that’s it. You seem to just like disagreeing for disagreement’s sake.

I misread it. I apologize. I thought that you were being jealous and insinuating things like I have seen people do about a billion times. I apologize. I do see it now.

though i am uninvolved, i want to note that it takes a real man to admit it.
i have certainly made my mistakes, and own up to them when i realize them, myself. it happens. good for you. this is the easiest way to keep things from distorting our shared online community.

I heard...
that Ralph pays $10,000 every morning for a delivery of fresh, endangered
Galapagos Penguin eggs that he orders his personal chef to cook into an omelet and then scrape into the garbage just for the sheer satisfaction of knowing he can…

I heard...
He likes to host galas for other billionaires, then he lets a bunch of mosquitoes free in a room full of people and said something to the effect of “If poor people can get Malaria, why not rich people?”…
Nah, but Bill Gates really did that.

And that’s the story of how I got malaria. A much more interesting story is how i was cured.

All children, of all colors, of all creeds, of all shapes and sizes, no matter what money they were born into, deserve an opportunity to get malaria.

Only bill’s FO would consider tagging SJ. Sad state of affairs when we have here, must be malaria.
I'm my most interesting man in the world. That Dos Equis dude is my valet. And the Bill's will win SB in my lifetime:) I Believe!
