Buffalo Bills HC Chan Gailey Approval Poll: February 2012
At the start of every month, we're going to poll the readers of Buffalo Rumblings on their state of mind regarding the chief decision-makers of the Buffalo Bills. This is your poll to state your pleasure, or lack thereof, with head coach Chan Gailey. Here are some stories Gailey has been heavily involved with over the last month.
- Fired defensive coordinator George Edwards and promoted Dave Wannstedt to that position.
- Confirmed that the Bills will be playing a base 4-3 defense under Wannstedt moving forward.
- Re-shuffled his coaching staff after George Cortez, Stan Hixon and Bobby Johnson defected to other teams. Changes made reportedly include: David Lee in to coach quarterbacks; Bob Bicknell to wide receivers; Pete Metzelaars in to coach tight ends; Andrew Dees in to assistant offensive line; Bob Sanders to linebackers; Adrian White to assistant defensive backs; and Eric Thatcher in to perform defensive quality control.

Disapprove of his job more than I ever have:
No clue how to properly manage personnel is probably my biggest gripe with him. That plus a pass wacky offense.

totally agree
and, “no clue” seems to pertain to coaches as well. Firing Edwards was good, hiring him to begin with, not so much. But, in the end, Edwards is the fall guy for the “ineptitude” that will remain after his exit. A fish stinks from the head.
For me, hitching his wagon to an inaccurate QB and developing a vanilla, transparent offense to hid that QBs’ flaws is a travesty. “Injures” are no excuse. The offense was exposed after a few weeks and 1-8 and 23 INTs was the result.

Any very little adjustments were made, for example running Spiller more when Jackson went on IR. Too many packages with Choice in the line up as well!

Chris Kelsay is a good football player.
I'll take an offense in the top half of the league in yards and points per game. Especially after the ones we saw before.

Even with that slide they still finished 14th in pts and yards.
My issue is the defense. He whiffed on George Edwards, who is not solely responsble but definately culpable. He can not afford to do the same with Wanny because I see this as his sink or swim season. Double digit wins or it’s time to move on.

Agreed
1st time I’ve voted “disapprove” I think…
How can anyone “approve” our 1-8 finish? Baffling personnel moves? Repetitive play calling? Lack of use of the run game? Extremely late adjustments? Hiring George Edwards? Throwing to Choice over CJ? Levitre at center? Continuously putting the game and our season in Fitz’s hand? Pushing for a waterbug in the 1st round when you don’t feel he can be a workhorse? Allowing 300lb linebackers? Our team playing so soft? Man the list goes on… But i guess this is all Buddy’s fault/sarcasm
I generally approve of Chan, but as the list compiles, it get harder and harder.
Sure, Fitz aced the Wonderlic test...but he does not pass the Eyeball test...

such as: Not throwing consistently to a productive TE, so we can lowball him now. Same for Top 5 RB. Same for 1st round selection Spiller. Even same for Steve Johnson, who managed a record, and excellent yardage, but he sure seemed to have been limited (perhaps it was just the defense, idk) to try and save some bank here as well.
I will throw IN that the signings we have made, have seemed like overpaying for overrated/under utilized players as well.

Has our expectations become that low as fan base [dont answer that ;) ] ? I do not see how almost 80% of the readers on this site can approve of 10-22 record with two losing streaks that almost to amount to a full season. Year in and year out, other teams around the league turn it around. OBD can make all the excuses they want, the NFL is a performance business and in my estimation, Chan and Buddy have not performed well…at all. Obviously I am in the minority. I guess Ill just have to respectfully disagree with almost 80% of you.

It seems like his coaching changes are all upgrades. David Lee, Dave Wannstedt, and Pete Metzelaars are all very exciting additions.
Chan made forward progress with the Bills from 2010 to 2011. I can’t wait to see what happens in 2012. I predict more forward progress, and competition for a playoff spot.

Keep drinking the Kool-Aid…
We improved in number of wins, nothing else, and a lot of them were against not good teams! Fitzpatrick had 1 more touchdown with 3 more games and an offseason devoted to being the starter to do so.
We actually got worse on defense even though we had an extra draft and offseason to develop our guys to play 3-4.
Stevie Johnson had less touchdowns and yards becoming our number 1 guy.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…
the coaching changes show he chose bad personnel to begin with!
I'm not drinking any Kool-Aid.
Wins are the most important stat in the NFL, and the fact that we improved in wins was enough to satisfy me. We beat a very good Raiders team and also the Patriots. We would not have won those games in 2010.
So, you can accuse me of being a blind, optimistic Kool-Aid drinker all you want, but I have legitimate reasons for believing what I believe. And it comes from my own observations, not what someone else told me to believe.

disapprove big-time
The team collapsed under his watch to the tune of 1-8 in a stretch where they didn’t even compete most weeks. I’m still not over the Levitre shotgun game in Miami- one of the worst coaching performances in generations. If the team had collapsed to the tune of 3-6, it would be sad, but could be chalked up to “growing pains” by the eternally optimistic Bills’ fan base. 1-8, mostly blowouts, is a smoking gun that the trajectory is down. That’s real scary when the plateau was low to begin with.

I dont like how we got here, but we are in the right scheem with the right coaches for the right players now. I give him points for making the call knowing that it would be judged harshley. That is leadership.

I think he has made some good coaching changes, although I wish he had never picked George Edwards in the first place. While the team was healthy at the start of the season, they showed that they could score almost at will, and they could beat just about anybody. Injuries ruined all that. I still feel good about him as our head coach for 2012.
However, I would still like to see some things from him. He needs to be more creative on offense, use the tight end as a receiving target more, and use Spiller more.

He did the best he could last year. I think with a full off-season and another solid draft and a few free agents, we will see a very hard working good bills team this year.
As I have said, CHANGE TAKES TIME. Years. Year 3 is usually where you see the change. We got the crap players off the team, got the crap dead cap space mostly off the team, and now, are good to go.

His record speaks for itself. Throw in two massive losing streaks where we were outclassed, out coached, etc. His division record is poor. I do not see a lot of hope. He just seems to be confused to me. I think he gets one more year and if there is not any signs of progress, he has to go

Voted not sure
I’m basically giving Chan one more chance. Almost voted disapprove because of the collapse last season and the fact that he didn’t really change the offense at all once teams figured him out. But my concern lies more with the fact that in 2 seasons he couldn’t find a way to utilize both Fred and CJ effectively when they were both healthy. This season is make or break for Gailey and I hope he can put it together and this team can make a push for the playoffs. I like the guy as a coach but in today’s NFL you really have to be ever adapting on both sides of the ball or teams are going to not only figure you out, but they’ll snuff you out too.

Definitely Agree with Ya
It’s hard for me to answer this one, especially given all the many variables that affected our disappointing season – we saw some “good” and a lot of “bad” and not all of it was Chan’s fault (after all, he didn’t have an abundance of “playmakers” even before the injuries started piling up). That said, the buck has to stop with Chan so, no matter how ya look at it, he’s gone 4-12 and 6-10 respectively.
I like Chan as well but totally agree that he’s gotta make some major strides next year (and I don’t mean a 7-9 season). Like all fans, I’d love to see some stability with regards to our coaching staff and that’s gotta translate into WINS, sooner rather than later too.
by RockyMTBillsFan on Feb 3, 2012 12:19 PM EST up reply actions
I am just amazed
that coaching and management are getting such a free pass from this fanbase, which hasn’t exactly been patient with past regimes.
I know we associate Chan with offense, but our defense—which was one of the worst in the league—is just as much his responsibility.
3 years
I give him 3 years to see an improvement. We had no talent outside of 6 guys. It takes time to build a winner through the draft. Those who voted approve understand that it’s a process. It is as simple as that. Growing pains dude, growing pains.
I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.
Free pass
Or realistic expectations. To each his own, I for one reset my expectations to zero two years ago. As long as the 2010 draft class can be successful in the 4-3 (Carrington mostly, I really like his story) I am still very happy with what has transpired thus far.
Harooo
I just don't see much movement forward.
Once they got their bearings in 2010, I thought the Bills played like an 8-8 team. This year they played like a 6-10 team.
And while I understand that the new personnel needs time to develop, there are other cues we can look at to gauge progress. (Chemistry, camaraderie and coaching…)
I can be patient with personnel development, but I can’t help but cast a skeptical eye on the direction of the team when it seems that they fail to improve on these other fronts as well.
Leadership is key
Freddy was often termed the heart and soul of the team his loss went beyond his percentage of the offense. I think Kyle Williams and Wilson going down hurt the team in very much the same way. Dareus and Searcy played well respectively but neither had the years of NFL experience of adjusting to the offense. That’s the silver lining to the injury bug though those guys get the opportunity to learn.
Harooo
I was nice
I voted “not sure”, although I mostly disapprove at this time. There was a time that I approved of the job he had been doing, but that’s not happening anymore.
The offense started well under his tutelage this year, but was totally exposed and didn’t change much. The short passing game will not work for an extended time with Ryan Fitzpatrick. He’s just not good enough. The team got blown out numerous times this season and that lies at the feet of Gailey. The offense had virtually no big play ability (talent is lacking) without Jackson, especially in the passing game and that showed. You can’t live and die with this type of passing game when there aren’t receivers who can make big plays out of nothing. He’s done an admirable job getting what he can out of Fitz and a weak WR group overall, but it’s time to get more out of them. I will say, I’m impressed that the OL has taken such a leap forward, though I think Gailey has masked a lot of their deficiencies with the short passing and spread running game.
The defense is a mess and Gailey needs some accountability for that. He brought in Edwards, so that falls on him.
Gailey’s got one more year to prove he can lead this team. Unfortunately, I think the shovels have been digging for a while now. Buddy Nix has already provided the coffin and without a great offseason in terms of personnel, it’s just a matter of time for Chan.

Well said and rec'd
This team has to take the next step, period, or this is his last year. Defense lacked talent, but better coaching could have gotten a bit more out of them then some of those record worst performances we saw.
I do find it noteworthy that both Stevie and Marcell, at different times to different reporters, said the locker room had a different feel after all the injuries hit. They both mentioned the leadership void from the players at the beginning of the slide. They mention the loss of Freddie and Kyle specifically as altering the mood/atmosphere in the locker room.

I would like to see him run the ball a lot more. I like the way Chan can move the ball. Even with limited talent at the WR and TE position. He gets the most out of his guys. But we were running the ball so well, even when Freddie got hurt. He quits on it way too early. I’d rather have the game in Fred/Spillers hand than Fitz’s

haha, that we are totally anemic. At least I was excited to watch the offense for most of the season. He moved the ball nicely until we hit that losing streak, but then picked it up towards the end against Denver and NE in the firs half. We need more talent around Fitz, but again, running the ball more is my biggest critique of Gailey so far. Otherwise, he does a great job getting a lot out of nothing really. Fitz is not a great QB, and the only wide out worth anything is Stevie…would like to see how Chan does without SJ next year lol…they can’t let him walk, we’d be left with nothing
running game, and a better defense
should translate into a better team.
he and fitz work well together.
worth watching the fitz throws before
he was hurt, against NE……
buffalobills.com has nice chat with gailey
about it.
when he had his mojo…..
gailey can call a good game.
he can call a poor game.
but with his running game, fitz
should be able to play to his
strengths.
still, it all blows up if the do not resign
stevie…..
i am slowly coming to the conclusion
they really need to keep that QB-WR
relationship together……
watching some of those throws and catches
against revis and against the pats, and seeing
the rest of the season one time live or on tv,
i just do not see how the bills do not suck it up
and pay stevie what they need to to keep him.
gailey is good, but this is not the time to reinvent
the high quality relationship between receiver and
QB….
what in the world
has changed since January to cause a 24% increase in approval rate? Are you approvers saying the firing of Edwards solves the ills of this team? Are these things so quickly forgotten?:
Who hired Edwards?
Whose team went 1-8 down the stretch?
Whose QB resembles an Amish Blunderbuss more than an Amish rifle?
Whose QB threw for 6.4 yds./ATT?
Whose QB threw 23 INTs?
Who abandoned a productive running game week after week whether using Fred or CJ, all while his QB was self-destructing?
Who routinely ignores the TE in his offense when it’s “in vogue” throughout the rest of the league and a proven weapon against todays’ defenses?
I don’t see it…especially not in one unimportant month unless all the “disapprovers” are at work. ;-P

My vote is based purely on what he has done in the last month. As the season is over, the switch to Wannstedt and the 4-3 is all I was looking for.

So you were looking for Gailey to completely abandon 2 years worth of 3-4 pursuit, promote a guy from within, outright say Fitz is our man no matter what, and shoulder nearly no blame for an abysmal finish that included an unanswered come from behind spanking from the patriots? I can see how that is worthy of approval!
wow
OK then. I’m looking at the overall body of work. I do not believe the entire problem was Edwards and cannot give Gailey a pass for axing one of his buds…one that he hired.
And further, after 14 defensive draft picks in two years geared towards the 3-4, we’re on to Wannstedt who is not comfortable with the 3-4. Fitting the defense to the DC, after 2 years of building for a 3-4 is an even bigger indictment of his leadership, IMO.
P.S. Wannstedt is not/will not be the answer either. If he was, he wouldn’t have gone from NFL HC, to college HC, to NFL LB coach. My fear is that, another failed year by Gailey, will result in Wannstedt claiming the HC job. More mediocrity…

The switch back to 4-3 is embarrassing more than hurtful to the team. We struck out so thoroughly at finding 3-4 bodies that it’s a wash. In a way, I respect Chan for having the guts to make the change after realizing plan A was not working. That is an off-season example of changing on the fly, something many of us wanted in-game when Fitz was having his troubles (i.e., more rushing, less passing).
Cooler heads more than likely.
There was so much frustration at the end of the year. I think the Stevie benching had a profound effect on votes too.
A month removed from the heartbreak might mean people are viewing the whole season now.
I’ll be completely honest and say that week 3 by itself almost erases the rest of the heartache for me. Man, that was a great week….

A few things:
It is silly to have a poll now, nothing is really going on. Outside of him firing Edwards and some minor stuff, he hasn’t done any real coaching.
In addition to that, he has done well. We beat a playoff team, several of them. The quality of our wins was better. At full strength, the offense looked good. The defense needs more playmakers, no doubt, but, they will address that this year.
I don’t see how you can give up on any coach or FO before 3 years pass. We all agree the state of the franchise after the DJ era was very poor. Right?
We all agree the talent level after the DJ era was poor, what did they have that was good (outside of the K/P)- 10 guys out of 55?
Now, this team has more playmakers on it. It has better talent on it. Growth takes time, 3 years minimum. Before you say what about detroit, denver, SF, those teams were loaded with talent before the new staffs started. I wonder how long until the Colts are good again…
When you can’t get quality help in FA, the only way to build is via the draft and that is all you can do. To expect more is just going to get you frustrated. You can’t change the hand we have. Until we are good FA’s don’t want to come here. The only way we can get good quickly is to get FA’s to come here. Ergo, we can’t get good until 3 years later.
I'd rather go out in a blaze of glory, then slowly fade away in the antiquities of time.

I’m giving Chan the benefit of the doubt, it was tough last year with practices being cut short by the lock-out. With the Bills in a rebuilding mode having loss so much time definitely hurt them.
O-line was much improved, CJ started showing why he was a high pick and last years draft class got plenty of playing time…Defense just doesn’t have enough horses yet to get them over the top.
Coaches come and go all the time on good teams and bad teams, I’m hoping the coaches that were hired can bring more to the table then the ones that left.
For what Chan started with it was bound to take a longer time to be competitive. An as a Bills fan as much as I want them to be a playoff team over night I know it isn’t realistic. He will be in his 3rd year and I’m expecting that we will see a big approvement…

If you approve, the torrents of mistakes Gailey or Nix made come crashing in, along with how it’s inevitable that Nix and Gailey will fail. This month, I’d say it was rather clever, with the Kool-aid guy, and all.
If you disapprove, you’re being negative, judging everyone too quickly, and not giving the team enough time to develop. Fitzpatrick is going to improve, and then this argument eventually devolves into how much of a Bills fan one is.
Even if you’re not sure, you kind of have to take a side with some issues, and that drags into the previous two items.
I voted.

I’m not happy with everything they do.
But, I love my Bills.

I love the Bills. LOVE
But the NFL, like almost everything is the world, is an interactively complex system. There’s absolutely know way that someone can look at what Nix or Gailey are doing and determine anything without context. And that context, however inaccurate, is all most prognosticators have to go off. Like Mark Twain said, history never repeats, but it rhymes.
With that said, how are we grading Nix and Gailey? How long does it take to turn a franchise around? Are there any models? How do we know? In short, it’s almost impossible to predict anything. The move to a 4-3 could be the undoing of Nix and Gailey, and lead to the Bills relocation to another city. It could also spark a dominant defense and a Super Bowl win.
What if I said in 1995 that Buffalo was going to draft a QB, get a finesse offense and defense, and make a run to the Super Bowl that way? Crazy talk, especially after the 1990-94 teams. But that’s how Indy won a Super Bowl. The Giants were hot garbage 2005-2007 until the last few games of 2007. No one saw a Super Bowl in that team.

Oh yes..
If nothing else we are a passionate bunch.
Its better when not everyone agrees, but its a bummer when it turns personal. There’s no reason for that.
I know im viewed as one of the more negative posters. Ive been anti-Gailey from the get go and Im sure people purposely avoid my posts at times. I understand it. No one likes to be around negativity all the time.
I dont know if its a good thing or a bad thing that things are the way they are with the team…Gailey’s record so far has vindicated my initial fears and yet im still extremely troubled by the fact that the team appears as of right now like its no closer to getting better.
Obviously in terms of my ego this is satisfying…yet its depressing.
I feel bad for those who tried their best to look for all the positives when the new regime came in…those folks are the ones truly getting stomped on.
I stopped feeling about this team years ago…and thats the sad part. I couldnt put my heart into another team even if I wanted to.
The score dictated they pass

I know what you mean. There are only so many heartbreaks that a person can take before the emotions get shut down. I still love to watch, but I expect to be disappointed now. Sad fact.
I have always liked Lindy Ruff’s comments after a loss, ‘We gotta get back to work." That’s the best anyone can do, and until the Bills stop working, I’ll support them.
Also, winning is about personnel only up to a point, then it’s about cohesion and trust and repetition. If we stick together, the tide will turn. Other teams will be filled with rookies. And, the Bills will be in position to grab the prize. If we stick together.
