Normally, it is senseless to post a FanShot from the bb.com... but I not only found this an interesting read, I wanted people to take note about the "golf swing" quote that Lee makes. I have drawn this same comparison, and this article has me optimistic that Fitzpatrick working with Lee, could do WONDERS for his game.

"It’s like golf. If you have a fundamentally bad swing, if you don’t get help and somebody helps you fundamentally correct that you can go out and hit a million balls and just keep hitting them badly," he said. "But if your fundamentals are good you have a chance to get better."

I have consistently spoken about Fitzpatrick’s feet. This most people are aware, is fundamental to QB accuracy. But another thing that is of interest to me is the way that Fitz uses his shoulders and hips, to apply additional torgue to the ball. One of his issues, is not moving his shoulder and arm forward on a good plane. He sometimes is too sidearm, and his release time, causes the ball to float, or be thrown into the turf. With better mechanics, he can stop just sorta “hurling” the ball towards his target, and he will be able to “place” the ball in their vicinity, making the ball not only more accurate, but more catchable. This has been my favorite non-Buffalo Rumblings article in some time. Hopefully others will read, and get excited about what kind of strides Fitzpatrick can make, with a guy who has experience in improving QBs’ understanding of body movement, mechanic, and footwork. Best possible case scenario.

so would you be up for trading for Tebow and having Lee fix him?

Joe...

Trade who or what for Tebow?

by mikeo76 on Feb 9, 2012 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

Can really say at this point....

No way the Broncos can trade Tebow unless they can give their fans a better option like Manning or Luck. Tebow’s trade value wasn’t really the point of my post. The point was to see if the same people who think Tebow can’t be fixed think that Fitz can be fixed.

but Tebow has an odd throw. He even knows it. Fitz doesn’t have an odd throw he just needs to work on foot work and other minor things.

That’s a terrible, terrible comparison Joe. You’re trying to paint someone in a corner with that comment

odd how? I thought his release was fine...

Wasn’t most of his predraft preparations focused on compacting his windup and polishing up his footwork during 5 and 7 step drops?

if you don’t know how Tebows throw is odd then I can’t help you. Even he himself has said that – how could you possibly think otherwise is a bit of a mystery

if you don't know...just say you don't know

Like I said, I thought the odd part of his throwing motion was the windup. If you think otherwise then tell me what other parts are odd.

i would say

like most left handers, he starts with his hand basically on his hip, and then he is also throwing halfway between sidearm, and straight forward. he uses his shoulders more than he should. He doesn’t step into the throw as much as he could. He relies on his arm strength. He also, changes his release point in his throw, which is something Fitz does as well, which will cause balls to come out high, or low, depending if he is early, or late. He too, would benefit from a more straight forward throw, where the arm stays on the same play, and there is no “whip” motion to it. They both more “sling” the ball, than actually propel the ball forward.

disagree. he throws halfway between sidearm, and correct. He throws awkwardly, at least IMO.

me personally?

No. I think we already have a prospective “mobile QB” on the roster, we are likely to add a QB asap, and though I think Tebow can be a successful QB, he isn’t what I would want for a franchise QB. That may just be me… I just want to see a 6’4" 225-240lb kid who has a strong arm, and can learn the system for 2-3 years, and then… step in and be Aaron Rodgers. I don’t think Tebow has that potential. I also, don’t think that the Broncos will take less than a second for him, and I rather use our second on a pass rusher. (even if we use our first on one. I prefer Floyd, myself. As, I am sure you have read. )

If Tebow fixes his mechanics and improves his accuracy, how would he not be a franchise QB?

as a first round selection, in year 3

his expectancy is decreasing while his expectations are increasing. I didn’t say he wouldn’t be a franchise QB if he improved those things. What I WOULD say, is that if he hasn’t fixed them yet, there is less likelihood he will. And, yes, I think there is still the chance (in fact a greater chance due to age) of this being the case with Fitzpatrick as well. It doesn’t mean that if I am going to be forced to watch the guy, I can’t be hopeful for his improvement, and as I point out- the only reason I shared this article is due to the golf swing reference, which i have used a number of time regarding Fitz-so to me, it really is only for that validation that I care about this at all. It doesn’t realy mean it will amount to a hill of beans. But, you asked, and so- I answered, with my opinion. Also- at no point did I say he would “not be a franchise QB” i said he isn’t what “I want in a franchise QB” and at risk of sounding like I don’t like southpaws (even though my mom, and cousins and uncles, and aunts are)- i think that running formations in the NFL backwards affects some players (some more than others obviously) and the last thing I want is yet another issue arising from a newly added QB. I just want my friggin Rivers/Rodgers/Manning/Brady/Ryan/Stafford… I mean, why can’t I have a

6’4" 225-240lb kid who has a strong arm, and can learn the system for 2-3 years, and then… step in and be Aaron Rodgers.

That is all I want. I am not looking for another project, who will take more time, and then just fail anyway. Sure that could be the story for anyone, but if given multiple years- i think they are going to have a chance to come in and be productive. Heck, give me a Skelton. Give me back LEVI BROWN!!! and let him sit and learn, and be the guy of the future. we could have had a whole additional year of learning for him, if not for Tyler Thigpen, who frankly sucks.

The time issue is a valid point.....I think Tebow can be fixed

but Denver has wasted two years that should have been spent fixing his mechanics. Brady’s QB coach was recently quoted as saying he could fix Tebow’s mechanics in 3 weeks but he wasn’t sure how long it would take for him to stop reverting in games. Either way, I don’t see Denver getting Manning, so they are most likely going to have to stay with Tebow. I am excited to see what Kirk Cousins looks like at the combine/Pro Day. I think he could be a good 3rd round pick. Let him sit behind Fitz for a year or two and we might have ourselves a QB.

yes, they have.

I don’t understand why, either. Are these GMs/Coaches so out of touch with player potential? Are they too close, to look at it unbiased? I think sometimes, they want to “ignore the hype” and then forget to recognize not only what the hype can do, but that fact that they found success not because of their school alone, but because of the individual. Josh McDaniels looks much less dumb, after being gone, because we are getting a glimpse into what he had as a vision, and it isn’t too bad. I woulda ditched Cutler and Marshall, for D Thomas alone. I think Tebow was a bonus.

unfamiliar with Cousins- will check him out. I don’t really “delve” in very much until the combine, and then i live and breathe these guys, and impatiently await pro-days for the rest. Often, i end up going back to look at highlights that guys like DJ may have seen happening in live time, and are already aware of, but for that same reason, none of my judgement is generally clouded by any kind of fandom for a guy. I tend to just look at size, measurables, production, and fit. Those things are really the type of things I think trump many other facets of the game. Sure, I will be less familiar with guys outside the 3rd round or so- but that doesn’t mean that I hit any less often, cuz really, the pool is smaller, the needs have been addressed some, and so we are looking at whether guys fit, and what their measurables are, and their size…and there it is. I already know that stuff. So, I like my methods, for my own purposes. I also love to hear other’s opinions to see if there is something i hadn’t considered, or have missed.

had the same thoughts when I read this yesterday, only thing is you would think other qb coaches would have been through this with Fitz.. Hope the change works.

by billfan on Feb 9, 2012 7:08 AM EST reply actions

well..... to that....

what QB coach? That has been Chan. Modkins is the running game coordinator, Chan is a system designer. I am not saying Chan doesn’t know about mechanics, but it does make sense for him to bring in a guy who has that kind of experience, because FItzpatrick can obviously benefit from that kind of focus, and Chan still won’t have the time to devote to that. I think really, that their bringing in Lee means they recognize the things I have seen myself, and that Lee might be able to help him stop doing the things that lead to his inaccuracy.
