SIGN HIM!!!!!!
He’s obviously not worth the 10M per year that Al Davis signed him for, but he is a great CB that would complete the bakfield for Buffalo, as well as allow us to move past McKelvin or McGee. I would love to see Routt opposite Williams for the next 3 to 5 years.

I can't remember
During the Raiders game, one of their corners was doing a really great job defending Stevie. Was it Routt?

It was.
And Routt is a great man coverage DB, he is weak in zone though, and very prone to penalties. But if he can clear up his penalty issues he very much worth a shot.

idk if he is a GREAT man coverage DB
if they cut him for allowing the most TDs of any defender on their team (7). I do think he plays good press man, and he is probably more of a liability in zone, but he is two things we need desperately at the position. TALL, and FAST. He could maybe be a good slot addition, to try and cover some of the TEs that we have absolutely no solution for on our roster.

Would be a good pickup. What I’m hoping for is that we get another one of his teammates in FA.
According to rotoworld Richard Seymour is set to make $7.5 mil base + $7.5 mil roster bonus in 2012. If Oakland releases him we should bring him in. The rotation of Dareus/Williams/Seymour/Troup would be very strong.
He’s still performing at a good level and managed to get 6 sacks last year.

Would be cool
But would rather spend the money elsewhere. Routte makes sense though
Who sits on the bench? Williams or Dareus or Seymour?

Williams plays 2/3 of the snaps in a game.
Dareus plays 2/3 of the snaps in the game.
Seymour plays Williams’s other 1/3 + Dareus’s other 1/3 = 2/3 of the snaps in the game.
One of them won’t be the “starter” but they all 3 can theoretically play an equal number of snaps.
If Troup shows enough potential to warrant snaps you can alter the ratio. The theory is this keeps them fresher throughout the game and season.

yeah
we need more DTs. 10 isn’t nearly enough.

If your argument is we shouldn’t get Richard Seymour, if available, because we already have (beyond Williams, Dareus, and Troup)…
…Lionel Dotson
Dwan Edwards (gone if we sign him)
Jarron Gilbert (could maybe be DE)
Kellen Heard
Spencer Johnson (gone if we sign him)
and Jay Ross
I’ll just have to say I respectfully disagree.

cool.
and yeah, my argument is that our needs are such, that to spend that kind of cap, on an aging potential non-contributor, is not where my head is at.
Edwards/Spencer are gone, if we sign them?? you mean, if we don’t?
Gilbert MIGHT be a DE but he is not very quick, which means he is a strong side DE, of which ALL the rest of our DT/DE candidates are also.
Ross is still on the practice squad. Heard can be cut, dotson can be cut, sure. but that means, we still have half a dozen guys at the spot where you want to sign an aging veteran, who will command more money than he is worth, for a non-contender. That’s where I am at.

Even though the plan is going back to base 4-3 most of the time, I’d imagine we’d still keep at least one of Spencer Johnson / Dwan Edwards as a rotational DT.
I figured for cap purposes we’d cut one of them since we don’t have a big need for depth that deep when they are aging and their better days are behind them – thus they don’t have the potential to get better and be bigger contributors like Kellen Heard might.
What I was trying to say is, if we signed Seymour we’d end up getting rid of not one of them, but rather both. If we signed Seymour to a 6 mil / yr average contract he’d cost just as much as keeping both Johnson and Edwards (I believe Rotoworld’s contract info said they both made around 3-3.5mil each for next year), but would be a much better contributor IMO. Even at age 32 he managed to get 6 sacks last year, and it seemed like he was still playing at a good level last year, though it is possible he falls off a cliff production wise, or he keeps playing til he’s 38 like Pat Williams.
Basically, my “too long; didn’t read” is that though DT isn’t a need, if the opportunity presented itself to better our 3 rotation depth by having Dareus-Williams-Seymour we could do that by cutting Edwards/Johnson while being par for course in terms of spending money. We could do that and increase the production of our D-line by keeping those three fresh throughout a single game or season. If Troup turned out to be starter worthy we’d have 4 good DTs that we could keep very fresh and wear down O-Lines quickly, and would have Giant style depth at DT rather than DE.

so you rather have one aging veteran, for the price of two?

you see it a lot on Reddit. TL;DR is for people that are lazy and don’t read long posts but want the cribnotes (not saying you’re lazy, haha, just for someone else that might be reading).
But yes, I’d rather have Seymour because even though he is an aging vet I see him as being much more productive and helpful than the other two. I’m more optimistic about how he can play the next few years so I don’t see him as an aging vet in the same sense that you do.

i see
so you were referencing your post, and saying “the moral is…” or the “long and short of it” or whatever. It is like a “blogging idiom” per say. Now I understand better.
I hear you on your view, and raise you a “I don’t want any old ass former Patriot costing me too much money to suck.” hahahaha
I just don’t want him, think he will cost too much, don’t feel he fills a need, and don’t see how he provides much improvement. So, in all, i just totally and completely disagree. Not for nothing, he is a fine Raider. Might make a mighty nice Cowboy. I just want him nowhere near here. Send him to Miami so we can watch him flounder on a losing roster rather than having success on an AMAZING ONE or doing “okay” on a decent one. He obviously isn’t a difference maker (or anymore?) in my eyes. Not a fan.

very interesting
i was going to put a FanPost out there just for his being released, because I think he is a solid prospect as a FA CB. But, I didn’t know if anyone would even care, without some kind of connection to us. That is cool, thanks for the post. I am not saying i would pay him ‘oodles’ if he expected it; I can say however I would gladly cut Florence, and redirect his money, along with maybe Leo’s (should we cut him) or some other cash his way. I think he is a good player, who is getting the blame for being relied upon too heavily. Or perhaps the other teams chose to target him because he isn’t great. I really don’t know, as i didn’t watch many raiders games. they are claiming he was responsible for letting in 7 TDs throughout the season, but really, i think the number of times he was in zone, would be relevant, or if he just plain couldn’t cover…. etc. I think he is worth considerations, for sure, and glad to see that Nix agrees not only with his value to our roster, but our needs at CB.

StanFord Routt...seems a lot like
Don’t know too much about him other than he got paid really well last year by the Raiders and it was a bad contract hence why he was released.
I like his size and everything, but reading the article on him…He sound like Drayton Florence and a lot of people dislike Florence here.
I mean he was most penalized corner they stated and he gave up a lot of touchdowns.
I know he was playing #1 CB in Oakland when he is probably better at #2 but will that really change things??
on the other hand...
Nice to hear the Buffalo Bills active and early regardless it is kind of refreshing.
I saw us right behind the Texans in the Mario Williams sweepstakes can’t deny i was just happy to see our name mentioned as a legit place he could go.
I know he was playing #1 CB in Oakland when he is probably better at #2 but will that really change things??
It changed when he went from 2 to 1. I guess it would change if he went back.
