Buffalo Bills GM Buddy Nix is in the midst of his third full off-season in his current position, and to say that he's been busy is putting it mildly. In the last 17 days, the Bills have re-signed eight players (two of which were restricted free agent tenders) and signed two high-profile free agent pass rushers. And we're only three weeks into March.
Of particular interest is just how much emphasis Nix has placed on defensive line investments in his three years on the job. Including this year's new acquisitions, we count nine defensive linemen of various sizes and skill sets that Nix has invested significant resources into since March of 2010. Let's take a look at those nine players, and exactly just how much the Bills have stockpiled defensive linemen in Nix's tenure. You'll find a timeline and a monetary chart after the jump.
March 17, 2010: The Bills signed defensive lineman Dwan Edwards to a four-year, $18 million deal with $6.65 million guaranteed.
April 23, 2010: On Day 2 of the 2010 NFL Draft, Nix used a second-round pick on defensive tackle Torell Troup, and a third-round pick on defensive lineman Alex Carrington. Troup would later sign a four-year, $4.61 million contract with $2.6 million guaranteed; Carrington would later sign a four-year, $2.66 million contract with $870,000 guaranteed.
September 29, 2010: The Bills signed defensive end Chris Kelsay to a four-year, $20 million contract extension, with an additional $4 million available in incentives.
January 1, 2011: Nix signed pass rusher Shawne Merriman to a two-year, $9.5 million contract with $5 million guaranteed.
April 28, 2011: On Day 1 of the 2011 NFL Draft, Nix used the No. 3 overall pick on defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, who would later sign a fully guaranteed four-year, $20.4 million contract.
August 26, 2011: Signed defensive tackle Kyle Williams to a six-year, $39 million contract extension with $17 million guaranteed.
March 15, 2012: Signed defensive end Mario Williams to a six-year, $96 million contract with $50 million guaranteed and another $4 million available in incentives.

Plus, we haven't talked about the remaining seven defensive linemen on the current roster that Nix acquired without using significant resources: Kyle Moore, Kellen Heard, Lionel Dotson, Jay Ross, Jarron Gilbert, Danny Batten and Robert Eddins. At this point, the only defensive lineman on the roster that a) was not acquired by Nix and b) has not gotten a new contract from Nix is Spencer Johnson.
