POLL: NFL Rule Change Proposal

In the early 80s the NBA was on borrowed time. In desperation, they added the three-point shot to begin (or restart the abortive) Larry Bird Era and became America's most profitable major sports league, overtaking professional baseball and leaving the NFL in the dust. Ironically, basketball was a sport invented by a football coach as a way to keep his miscreant players off the street and out of trouble during the offseason.

It is time for the NFL to take a lesson from the NBA. The Alex Tanney Era has arrived: The League should add a basketball hoop to the back of the goalpost. The scoring could be as follows.

Field Goal Attempts:

4 pts (in addition to the 3 pts for the FG) if a kicked ball goes through the hoop before hitting the ground (a total of 7 pts).

2 pts (in addition as above) if a kicked ball hits the hoop without passing through it (a total of 5 pts).

Scrimmage Plays:

6 pts (in addition to the 7 for the TD) if a touchdown pass goes through the hoop before being caught by an eligible reciever (a total of 13 pts).

3 pts (in addition as above) if an eligible reciever, after catching a touchdown pass, puts the ball through the hoop before that player is tackled by a defensive player or steps out of bounds OR if that player tosses or hands-off the ball to another eligible reciever who subsequently puts the ball through the hoop before being tackled or stepping out of bounds (a total of 10 pts).

2 pts if the person taking the snap throws a ball--not caught by an eligible reciever nor intercepted by a defensive player--that passes through the hoop before touching the ground.

Extra Point Plays:

9 pts (including the extra point) if the kicked ball on a successful extra point attempt goes through the hoop before touching the ground (a total of 9 pts).

4 pts (including the extra point) if on a successful extra point kick, the ball is caught by any member of the kicking team and then is put through the hoop before that player is tackled by a defensive player or steps out of bounds OR if that player tosses or hands-off the ball to another eligible reciever who subsequently puts the ball through the hoop before being tackled or stepping out of bounds.(a total of 4 pts).

Two-Point Conversions:

6 pts (in addition to the two point conversion) if a pass thrown for a successful two-point conversion passes through the hoop before being caught by an eligible reciever (a total of 8 pts).

3 pts (in addition to the two-point conversion) if an eligible reciever, after catching a pass for a two-point conversion, puts the ball through the hoop before that player is tackled by a defensive player or steps out of bounds OR if that player tosses or hands-off the ball to another eligible reciever who subsequently puts the ball through the hoop before being tackled or stepping out of bounds (a total of 5 pts).

2 pts if the person taking the snap throws the ball through the hoop and the ball is not cought by an eligible reciever nor intercepted by a defensive player.
