News broke yesterday that tight end
Jake Ballard was being released from the
New York Giants following a torn acl he sufferred in the superbowl. If Ballard can clear waivers and have a successful rehab the Giant's would reportedly resign him in 2013.
My biggest concern with that last sentence, is the word "if". As we all know our beloved GM Buddy Nix has a penchant for combing through the waiver wire and being able to pick up solid players who can contribute either immmediately or somewhere down the line. This is no knock on Chandler or Smith who are the only real locks on the team at the tight end position. Chandler is our pass catcher while Smith is our blocking tight end. Personally, I would not mind Buddy and Co. signing Ballard as I believe what seperates good teams from great teams is depth and if our offseason is any indication so does Buddy Nix.
For those of you who did not get to read Brian's "State of the
Buffalo Bills Roster: Tight End" you should really go back and take a look because although 5 TE's are currently on our roster 3/5 (
Mike Caussin,
Fendi Onobun and
Kevin Brock) are question marks that have yet to succeed at the NFL level. Recent acquisition
Dorin Dickerson is now playing the half-back role and reportedly having a solid mini-camp thus far. Therefore, even if one of those players was cut and Ballard replaced their roster spot it would not hurt the team.
Other reasons I believe Ballard could be scooped up by the Buffalo Bills are the following; he's listed at 6'6'', posted 38 rec/604 yds/4 td's with a 15.9 yd reception last season, comes from a super bowl winning program and is of course undrafted where he would fit nicely with the rest of our goon squad. Ballard has only played for 2 seasons and has demonstrated decent blocking ability. So what say you fellow rumblers? Would you or wouldn't you be surprised to see Ballard playing in a different red, white and blue uniform in 2013?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
