I'm going to go out on a limb, based on the underwhelming preseason performance and questionable nature of the Bills backup QB position, and predict that no matter how successful Fitz might be as the starter this year, that the Bills will go ahead and draft a future replacement/backup QB in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. And I'm going to go ahead and project that WVU QB Geno Smith will be that pick.
I was aware of Smith last year but I'm basing this projection on the combination of his being projected as the #3 QB for 2013 here: http://www.rantsports.com/lacesout/2012/07/31/nfl-draft-2013-qb-prospects/ as well as prospect descriptions like this: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1235604-why-geno-smith-might-be-the-best-quarterback-in-the-2013-nfl-draft . The best thing about taking a QB next year is that his immediate future would be to groom as a backup and then groom him for several more years to eventually become the starter, rather than being forced to start a rookie QB. I'm hopeful the Bills can survive the 2012 season without really needing to play the backup QB much but I want them to draft a top prospect in 2013 so it can unfold like I already said.
