O, Mario, Mario! wherefore art thou, Mario?

So a while back I stated that I thought that the Bills spent way too much money on Mario Williams. In fact I did it right here. Now, not many people agreed with me, I think the popular response was that there was no way the Bills could have spent that money in a way that would have had a bigger impact.

There was a later post that I wanted to find but navigating the new format proved too difficult so I couldn't link it, in which somebody said that the reason the Texans let Mario walk was only because they couldn't afford him. Now that may have been a big reason considering how much the Bills grossly overpaid for Mario but the main reason that I can see is that J.J. Watt is by far a better player. In fact I said as much and I believe I said "mark my words." To which somebody replied, "your words are marked." Lets look at the stat lines through 4 games shall we.

Mario Williams : 4 games - 9 tackles - 7solo - 1.5 sacks

J.J. Watt: 4 games - 20 tackles - 16 solo - 7.5 sacks

That seems pretty clear cut to me. The Bills paid Mario Williams like he was the best defensive player in the NFL, and he isn't even close to the best player at his position on his old team. I have watched him get owned at the line of scrimmage all year, by players that he should have dominated, and he has been better at generating excuses then he has at generating presser on the QB.

Now I know that there is still time for him to turn it around, but I don't think he will. I said it before the season started and I am repeating it now. Mario Williams will have a few moments here and there, but especially when you take into account the amount of money he is getting paid, when all is said and done Mario Williams career in Buffalo will not be looked back on fondly. Rodney Harrison was right.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
