When looking at the Bills roster fans can't seem to find the Bills receivers. We run 5 wide sets yet have 4 receivers? What happens if we have the injury bug in a game? What are Buddy and Chan thinking?
All I know is that depth chart and roster positioning is almost useless when considering the Bills receiving corp.
The Bills have Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, Donald Jones and T.J. Graham listed on their roster as wide receivers. What's comical about this is while there are 4 wide receivers on the depth chart Buffalo has 9 total receivers that it will carry into the games on Sundays.
Scott Chandler, Dorin Dickerson, Brad Smith, C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson can all play wide receiver for the Bills. More importantly all have played WR plenty in our offense with Dickerson having the smallest amount of reps (just preseason). By my count that's 9 guys that can play wide when or if needed.
Having Spiller and Jackson in the game makes Buffalo's offense more diversified. There is a plethora of running or passing formations that the Bills can use to confuse defenses specifically because of our running backs. The Bills can go from a 2 RB 1 TE formation to 5 wide without changing personnel. The Bills are big on their players being diverse and it looks like our roster as of right now has plenty of players that can disguise looks and make tough choices for the opposing defense.
So while the roster might show 4 wide receivers, the Bills have 9 they can use on game days while making defenses pick their poison in regards to how they will play our personnel groupings.
