This fanpost is in response to Matt Warren's article from this morning: http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2013/1/22/3892690/chan-gailey-sitting-out-2013. I've been pondering this for the past couple of weeks (since we hired Marrone). Why do I still hate Dick Jauron, but will always fondly remember Chan Gailey? My goal with this fanpost is to see if other rumblers have the same feelings.
In my mind, these guys lost their gigs because of the same reason! Dick Jauron had significant offensive talent in his final year (T.O. in Blo, baby!) but was criticized for his offensive staff not utilizing that talent to any real degree. Then I look at Gailey, he was directly responsible for not utilizing the weapon that is CJ Spiller more. At Least Dick could pawn off some of the blame on his offensive staff. Chan was directly at fault. Yet I still think fondly of Chan and hate Dick.
Jauron went 24-33 (or .421%) in his 3.5 years as HC of the Bills. Gailey went 16-32 (or .333%) in his 3 years. Jauron had the Bills at 2nd place in the division one year (2007). Gailey's Bills ranked 4th in the division throughout his tenure as HC. You need to also look at the talent level. Jauron's Bills were far less talented than the squad Nix and Gailey had built (at least on paper)...yet, they still outplayed Gailey's Bills (even with a QB controversy). And, I hate Dick, but still like Chan.
I don't recall Jauron pulling a McGahee on his way out the door and calling all the Buffalo girls fat or anything. I seem to remember as gracious an exit as possible even with "Fire Dick Now" billboards all over the city. But I still hate Dick, and like Chan! Why, I ask you fellow Bills fans, why? Is it because Dick looked like a corpse and Chan talked like Andy Griffith? Dick went to Yale and Chan was educated in a charming one room school house without electricity or running water? Help me make sense of this paradox!
