Buffalo Bills' Doug Marrone Seeking Experienced Coordinators

USA TODAY Sports

At his introductory press conference, Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone shared that he wants NFL experience in his coordinators.

The Buffalo Bills officially introduced Doug Marrone as the team's new head coach at a noon press conference from One Bills Drive. While he wouldn't comment on the team's roster, he did share a little on his thoughts about the coordinators he would like to hire.

"The coordinators will need to have thorough NFL experience, especially on the defensive side of the ball," Marrone said during the press conference. "We're looking for people who want to be here."

Marrone had several coaches on his staff at Syracuse University with NFL experience. Donnie Henderson, Marrone's defensive backs coach in 2012, has experience as an NFL defensive coordinator with the New York Jets and the Detroit Lions. Nathaniel Hackett, a quality control assistant with the Bills under Dick Jauron in 2009, was in charge of Marrone's offense at Syracuse.

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coodinator Gary Gibbs coached with Marrone in New Orleans, and is likely looking for a job following the ouster of head coach Romeo Crennel. Former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith, who coached linebackers at the University of Tennessee several years before Marrone coached the Volunteers' offensive tackles, is also available, though their connection is much looser.

GM Buddy Nix was asked if the current coaching staff could be retained in some capacity.

"I would say there's a chance, but it's strictly up to Doug," said Nix. "He has said he would interview these guys, then the decision will be his."

None of Chan Gailey's former assistants are still employed by the team, but they have not yet been hired elsewhere. Dave Wannstedt seems unlikely to return as a coordinator, but linebackers coach Bob Sanders also has experience as a defensive coordinator in the NFL. Sanders and defensive backs coach George Catavalos both survived the transition from Jauron to Gailey, and could find themselves on the next defensive staff, too. Another veteran coordinator, Bruce DeHaven, is worth keeping an eye on.
