This is my first post so while I don't need you to be kind, please keep that in mind while reading...
I have been a Bills Fan for almost 30 years. I grew up in WNY and I lived and died throughout my childhood, college, and young adulthood. I lived through the end of Joe Ferguson, through the lean years until Kelly and Co. came, through the great Super Bowl Years, and now through the 13 years and counting of wandering through the wilderness. I don't know when it will end.
What I do know is that I am more energized by the things I see happening this year than I have been in a long time. I look at this team and I see a lot of reasons for hope.
OFFENSE: Our offense has been dynamic this year. I like what I see from the skill positions. Compared to all QBs since Kelly, EJ appears to be more capable, mentally and physically than all of them. Compared to Fitz (our most recent breakup), he seems to take care of the ball better (just look at TENN), can obviously move better, and will develop into a better leader. EJ has a few problems with accuracy, IMO, but he's been close and I think he'll only get better.
The strength of our offense is the RB core, we have really strong depth here and three backs that could contribute on a lot of teams. Obviously injuries are hurting us here, but I'd put our RB group up against almost anyone.
I really like what I see from the WR core. I've never been a huge Stevie fan, I think he would be a great 2nd WR. Woods is going to be the #1 eventually, maybe sooner than later. Goodwin make a trio of WRs that could be a top group in the future. I'd like to see more veteran leadership (should've come from Stevie).
The question mark for most of us is in the OL. I think the group we have now is average. They can't get a consistent push off the line and there's just a huge amount of up and down in their performance. This will only get fixed through the draft or free-agency, and there's so much question with each of those.
I've read many complaints about the coaching being vanilla and unimaginative but I disagree. Even though they run a lot of 1st and 2nd down, that's what gets you to 2nd and short and 3rd and short. That's when you can get creative. Of course, if the 1st down run goes for 1.5 yds, that ruins everything. (See OL above)
Overall, I see the offense as an exciting group with a good future. The sad thing is always that once the season is lost (and we are close right now), we'll get a different group next year...and then we start over. Hopefully the key building blocks will be around for years to come. That's the idea, right?
