Bills vs. Chiefs 2013: Bills QB situation in flux again

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

There is a very real possibility that the Buffalo Bills could be starting either Jeff Tuel or Matt Flynn at quarterback against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, as Thad Lewis is dealing with a rib contusion.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Thad Lewis is a 50-50 proposition for Sunday's home game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a rib contusion, according to head coach Doug Marrone. The head coach also reports that Lewis is working through a flu virus, as well.

Lewis injured his ribs on the first play from scrimmage in Sunday's loss to New Orleans, but did not miss a snap in the loss. X-rays were negative on his ribs, according to Marrone, but Lewis missed practice on Wednesday as he received treatment for the injury. Lewis has not been ruled out of the Week 9 contest, but if he can't return to practice by Friday, Marrone may roll with one of his backups.

Speaking of: Jeff Tuel and Matt Flynn split first-team reps in Wednesday's practice. Tuel was usurped for the starting role by Lewis a little more than two weeks ago following a rough showing in a Week 5 loss to Cleveland, while Flynn has only been with the team for that long. Tuel has served as Lewis' backup in each of the last three games, while Flynn has not even dressed for a game in Buffalo yet. Marrone will decide between those two if Lewis can't play, but given that history, it seems like Tuel would have a leg up in that race. He is very clearly hoping, however, that Lewis will be okay to play on Sunday.

EJ Manuel returned to the practice field on a limited basis on Wednesday, but has already been ruled out for the Chiefs game because he has not yet been cleared by doctors to return. To sum everything up: Manuel is out, Lewis might be, and if he is, Marrone is stuck between a rock and a hard place choosing between Tuel and Flynn as he's trying to beat the lone remaining unbeaten team in the NFL, which also happens to feature the league's best pass rush by a country mile.

Someday, Buffalo's quarterback situation will be nice and settled and not jaw-dropping and crazy again.
