Bills vs. Browns: Eric Wood calls T.J. Ward "classless"; Ward responds

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The Buffalo Bills center called the Cleveland Browns defender "classless" after some jawing following the EJ Manuel injury.

Immediately following the injury to Buffalo Bills starting quarterback EJ Manuel, center Eric Wood says he heard Cleveland Browns safety T.J. Ward make some "classless" comments towards the Buffalo bench.

"You’ve got T.J. Ward yelling at Kiko (Alonso), a former college teammate, ‘I told you to warn him that we were going to get him.’ That’s classless," Wood said in the locker room. "Every team has probably got them. I’m not going to say that nobody on our team has ever done that, but it ticks you off when someone on the other team does it for sure."

Manuel was injured when Browns safety Tashaun Gipson struck his knee on a rushing attempt in the third quarter. Gipson insists the play wasn't dirty - something Wood agreed with - and the hit was clean.

Ward spoke with reporters on Friday to give his take on Wood's accusations.

"That is completely inaccurate," Ward said. "I did speak to Kiko, and he went to Oregon with me. But anytime a player gets hurt, you never praise or root for players to get hurt. It’s competitive sport, a violent sport, but when you see players go down, no way in any shape or form it’s a celebration."

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Ward was pressed on whether or not he made the comments stating the Browns would come after Manuel. He denied saying it. Defensive coordinator Roy Horton said earlier in the week that Cleveland would indeed be coming after Manuel.

"If you do, that’s OK," Horton said, comparing the first round pick to a sports car. "We’ll hit that Ferrari and try to dent it up and kick the tires a little bit."

Gipson also weighed in on the hit Friday, saying he didn't intend to injure Manuel.

"Maybe my gesture at the end probably didn't suit it well," Gipson said, but insisted the play wasn't dirty. "It's the game of football. Things like that happen. I definitely don't intentionally try to hurt anybody. I wouldn't dare do that. I'm not that kind of player."
