Buffalo Bills sign Brian Moorman to replace Shawn Powell

Timothy T. Ludwig-US PRESSWIRE

The Buffalo Bills have a new punter, and the chances are excellent that you'll recognize the name.

In need of a punter following Friday's release of Shawn Powell, the Buffalo Bills have re-signed the most prolific punter in franchise history, Brian Moorman.

Moorman was Buffalo's punter for over a decade between 2001-2012, but was released early in the 2012 season after a slow start under previous head coach Chan Gailey. He was replaced by the aforementioned Powell, who struggled mightily for a year en route to his release following Thursday night's loss to Cleveland.

Now, Moorman is back to replace Powell. Following his release a season ago, Moorman spent the remainder of the 2012 season punting for the Dallas Cowboys. He spent this past summer in a punting competition with the Pittsburgh Steelers, losing out on that job after the Steelers signed Zoltan Mesko.

Moorman is the Bills' all-time leader in punts (862) and punting yards (37,859). A two-time Pro Bowl player and two-time first team All-Pro, the 37-year-old fan favorite will be charged with improving the Bills' punting hang time for a struggling punt coverage unit under new special teams coordinator Danny Crossman.
