FreddyJJ's Food for Thought

QB - Now more than ever this is a QB league and OBD has selected EJ Manuel as the new Franchise QB. Through 6 Games where he has started and finished EJ is now 3-3, with all the wins at the friendly confines of the Ralph. All of his wins are against teams still in the playoff hunt btw. It would be good of the Bills to build on the Jets gameplan and allow him to "just wing it" some more in the games to come, especially if Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods are back after the bye. Would still be wise of the Bills, if making a playoff push, to get a veteran backup going into next year, or face the same risk we saw this year when EJ went down.

Run Offense - Our Oline is the primary fault here as we get little push versus very physical lines - NYJ, PIT, CAR. The need to upgrade at LG and RT is evident, with the Matthews kid from A&M looking like a smart move as he can play any OL position. Plug him in at RT and move Chris Hairston to LG as he is a very good run blocker -assuming he is healthy. Otherwise a FA signing or mid round pick at LG is warranted. At RB, the time is here to pick the next bell cow. Why you ask - two reasons predominantly. Freddie Jackson will be 33 next year and the bell is tolling as he is getting dinged every other week now. And as for CJ Spiller, he is a FA after next year, and based on this years performance, can't see OBD giving him an extension in this offseason. Expect a 3rd or 4th round pick to be used on a bigger RB in 2014.

Pass Offense - At WR I can see a day where Stevie leaves in next 2 years so there is a need for a larger WR to be # 1 go to guy, but dont see OBD taking one next year. TE is another story as I believe a down the seam (remember NO offense likes 4 verticals) TE is a pressing need. There are several coming out this year. For balance of the year I expect Hackett will juggle his top 4 WRS to see who are best 3 in the 11 package. At TE, expect Hackett to start using Gragg and Rodriguez down the seams more after the bye in an effort to make safeties pick which vertical route to cover. Much as Buddy/Doug stacked talent at WR in this draft, expect OBD to do the same at TE next year.

Run D - See the signings to read where concerns are. After bye, Stefan Charles will get more playing time to see if he or Carrington are the other dual run/pass defender Bills need ala Kyle Williams and Mr Big Stuff. OBD knows Branch is not, so if Carrington is allowed to leave, the 5 technique DE will be a need next year. Our Run D is still an issue and the other spot to be upgraded is WLB where Moats/Bradham are a liability. A CJ Mosley or Khalil Mack could work in this role and Mack would also offer some 3 down position versatility playing in coverage or blitzing.

Pass D - Bills are currently #1 team in Sacks and Picks in the NFL, granted they have played 11 games and faced more snaps than any other NFL team. On the bad side they have given up 2nd most TDs (22) via the air. Coverage better lately but need to resign Byrd and get a 4th CB who can actually play.

ST - sign Carpenter long term and find a punter to take over next year
