The Buffalo Bills sat at home on Sunday and gained a half-game in the AFC Wild Card chase. If only it were always this easy.
Losses by the 5-5 New York Jets and Miami Dolphins dropped them into the rest of the pack clumped tightly at 5-6. Buffalo is one game back at 4-7. The Kansas City Chiefs lost but remain the No. 5 seed at 9-2 and the first wild card. They've clinched finishing ahead of the Bills by owning the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Teams at 5-6
9. San Diego Chargers
10. New York Jets
Teams at 4-7
14. Buffalo Bills
The tiebreaker situation isn't great for Buffalo. The first tiebreaker is in the division with head-to-head tiebreakers coming into play. The Bills have a strong 2-1 record against Miami and New York. The Dolphins and Jets square off next Sunday for the first of two meetings this season, meaning Buffalo won't be able to overtake one of them even with a win against thein Toronto.
At the top, Baltimore and Pittsburgh square off on Thursday night. Load up with your turkey early, folks. Buffalo owns the tiebreaker against Baltimore, but not Pittsburgh. The Steelers won the first matchup between the two and could put a stranglehold on second place in the division - remember the first tiebreaker in a jumbled Wild Card picture happens between dividional foes- and put a huge dent in Buffalo's playoff hopes.
We'll have more on who to root for this weekend later in the week. For now, enjoy Buffalo being within one game of tiebreakers even mattering.
