I started wondering, if I were Doug Whaley and Jay Cutler became a free agent - which is possible, possibly doubtful, but definitely not probable based on reports - would I make a serious attempt to sign him?
I suppose the reason that I gave this some thought was that I feel like this team with Jay Cutler could make a legitimate run at the playoffs and potentially a championship, especially if we go out and get a playmaking WR/TE in the draft. We also have some other obvious needs which have been discussed to death since the bye week as the Bills have made a resounding effort to throw this season away. We also need some help on the offensive line, we also need another athletic linebacker to play next to Kiko. We can never use too many corners. If Byrd leaves, that's a big hole. In spite of all these things, my gut tells me this team can win a lot more games with Jay Cutler at the helm. This is a quarterback's league.
As for the repercussions of signing Cutler, they would be detrimental but not disastrous for EJ. He has demonstrated that he is just as raw as we thought. As others have mentioned on the board, he has shown a lot of growing pains without showing as high of a ceiling as we would have hoped. Giving him a few years to sit may not be the best way to make him improve, but it is one way. Personally, I would much rather learn how to be an NFL QB from Jay Cutler than Thad Lewis and our non-existent QB coach. On the flip side, Cutler is only 30...do we really need EJ to improve? We could ride the end of Jay's career and draft another QB six years from now!
Personally, although I feel I've provided a lot more advantages than disadvantages to signing Cutler, I'm not sure how I feel about signing him. I'm not sure what the Buffalo Rumblings community thinks either. I'm sorry that I didn't provide any statistics, but I feel that is more of a philosophical decision about the state of the team and the development of EJ Manuel. If you feel the team is really that bad, or EJ can really improve, you probably don't sign such a big name QB. However, there's a lot of variables involved and a lot of grey area. I didn't even touch on cap space but it is also a huge issue.
So anyways, what do you think?
