Random Thoughts

Not to be confused with deep thoughts....

  • On NFLshop.com they have Ryan Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson jerseys on sale. They tend to put the jerseys of former players on sale, generally about half price. Jackson's are $20 off while Fitz's are $40 off. It could be that NFLshop just over stocked on players who were supposed to have good 2012 seasons. Or it could be that they've gotten a heads up or just done some deductive reasoning. It bears watching.
  • Alec Ogletree's DUI coupled with his drug suspension at Georgia pretty much should keep him off of Nix's first round radar. He was quoted as talking about convincing teams that he's a good person and teams shouldn't make up their minds based on "just what they hear about me and stuff." He reminds me of Janoris Jenkins, who the Bills might have taken in the second round but certainly weren't even thinking about in the first.
  • Jarvis Jones may be the Da'Quan Bowers of 2013. Bowers fell all the way out of the first round because of his injury. Jones has a condition that could scare Buffalo and other teams away. He probably won't fall out of the first, since it is hard to see Rex Ryan passing on him for anyone but maybe Milliner.
  • Dion Jordan has, according to PFT, been getting more interest from 3-4 teams than 4-3 teams. What does Buffalo play again? Oh, yeah, we don't really know since the team can't seem to figure it out either. Chip Kelly talks about him saying that Jordan covered the occasional slot WR. Yeah, scrub slot WRs on third tier college teams doesn't equate to the ability to cover slot WRs in the NFL. Still, if he can hang briefly with TEs then Nix may be interested...even with the shoulder injury. Jordan has boom-or-bust written all over him and you know how those guys have turned out for Buffalo lately.
  • The David Nelson news caught me by surprise. I don't see him as a legit #2 WR but, given his size, the team could do a lot worse at the #4 or #5 WR slot. Coming off of a season ending injury it doesn't seem all that likely that he's going to get a big contract in free agency. (If he does, good for him-sign it and don't look back.) I won't be surprised if the Bills offer him a 3-4 year deal before free agency begins, something based on veteran minimums with some attainable bonus escalators. If Nelson doesn't return two names to keep in mind are Rodney Smith from Florida State and Marcus Davis from Virginia Tech.. Smith is 6'4" 225# while Davis is 6'3" 233#--they had the biggest hands of any of the WRs at the Combine and Smith had the longest arms. Davis looks to be about a 5th rounder and Smith about a 6th. Either of them should fit the size mismatch role that Nelson held down.
  • I've seen on Walterfootball a note that the Bills don't like Ryan Nassib. Then I saw something (on PFT or bb.com, can't remember which) about Marrone not asking any questions when Nassib sat down with the Bills at the Combine. Marrone has reportedly given even handed answers to Nix about Nassib. Nix went out of his way to warn against connecting Nassib to Buffalo due to Marrone. Put it all together and it sounds like Nassib isn't the QB the Bills are looking at in the draft. Sure, it could be a smokescreen but that doesn't seem terribly likely. It's not like someone else is going to take him in the first seven picks, and possibly not until well into the second round.
  • I'm no fan of Nix. With that said, he hasn't been blowing smoke when he's talked about staying true to his board-at least in the first round. Spiller, Dareus, and Gilmore would have come off the board in the pick or three right after Buffalo's had the Bills gone in another direction. I don't see Nix taking a QB at 8 if the Bills don't have any QB rated as a top 15 guy. If the Bills have a QB rated as the 8th-15th best player on the board then I can see Nix reaching a little bit to take that QB. If the Bills don't have any QB on their board as being in the top 15 then I don't see Buffalo taking one at 8-either trading back into the first or sitting tight and taking one in the second.
  • KC and Philly have begun talking about Nick Foles. Foles doesn't fit what Chip Kelly wants to do while Reid obviously likes him. It seems like a matter of ‘when' not ‘if' the Chiefs get Foles out of Philly. That removes one team from the QB derby. Meanwhile, the Browns are making noises about building around Weeden. It would make more sense in terms of deception to not talk about Weeden at all-in order to get teams to trade up for a QB those teams might worry about Cleveland taking. Alex Smith has to go somewhere. (Arizona?) Several of the QB needy teams might be out of the market by draft day, making it even more likely that Buffalo passes on a QB at 8.
  • WR Cordarelle Patterson has been linked to Buffalo in several mock drafts, including one that I put up on Rumblings. The more I look at him the more I wonder if he's going to get a first round grade from the Bills. He doesn't even really qualify as a one year wonder in that in his only relevant year, Patterson caught 46 passes of which 5 were TDs. Keenan Allen, on the other hand, has produced for three years at Cal. He had as many receptions and TD catches (though not as many yards) as a freshman as Patterson did in his lone productive year-and that was Allen's least productive season.
  • It pains me to say it but I doubt we finally see Nix work the board and maximize the value of the #8 pick. Joeckel won't make it past the Eagles and quite possibly will be the first overall selection. Lotuleli probably doesn't get out of the top 3. Werner is most likely a top 5 guy. With those players coming off the board at some point before #8, one or more of Jarvis Jones, Eric Fisher (probably doesn't get past Arizona-or even Philly if Joeckel goes to KC), Damontre Moore, Dee Milliner, Chance Warmack, Mingo, Richardson, Jordan, Vaccaro, Allen, and most (all?) of the QBs will be on the board. Nix will take one of them - maybe a defender who won't fit whatever scheme the Bills shift to next year - and then possibly have to trade up if a QB run begins in the early teens.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
