So the first day of free agency has passed, and a lot of fans have freaked out about the lack of movement from the Bills in free agency. There are a number of reasons why fans shouldn't freak out.
The good teams in the NFL aren't buyers right now. You don't see much from the Falcons, Patriots, Steelers and Ravens right now. Why? Because teams that are active on the first day of free agency traditionally overpay. As Adam Shefter just noted, there is no value on day 1 and 2 of free agency - no discounts. And that is why the good teams aren't just rushing out of the gate. Miami fans might be very excited today, but they have $90 million invested in Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline. The Dolphins have spent a lot of money early, but people forget to mention that they are losing their starting CB, LT and RB. It's easy to get excited about the flashy signings, but the Bills don't need flashy right now.
Right now the Bills have their cornerstone players - Spiller, Johnson, Mario, Kyle, Dareus, Gilmore, Wood, Glenn, and Byrd. 9 of the 22 starters are considered in the "good to great" range - and are relatively young. The problem in other areas the team is very young and inexperienced or just bad. But it doesn't mean the Bills should be giving out ludicrous contracts for perceived superstars, when they really need an upgrade of talents.
Mid-tier linebackers and wide receivers could provide immense help next season. $7 million a year for Ellerbe is too much. $12 million a year for Wallace is crazy, as is $8 million for Andy Levitre. Jared Cook signed for almost $8 million a year! While all are good players you can argue they are not worth the price tag.
If you can get Chad Rhinehart for a third of the price of Levitre, would you complain? What about Dustin Keller for a fraction of Jared Cook's contract? And I know the team still needs a QB - but that has been known and yesterday's move just confirmed it.
Try to have a little patience and see what moves are made over the next week. Yes, there are plenty of positions that can use an upgrade - but don't freak out because no huge contracts were given out on day one.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
