It's obvious the Bills aren't a player for anybody of note this year, which is understandable and to be expected. But they can also help their team 2-3 years down the road with some shrewd pickups going forward. Time to look for younger free agents that can be valuable pieces in a few years. Yeah, easier said than done, but there are some out there.
Unless it's a cheap 1 year deal, I don't think signing guys like Brandon Moore, DJ Williams, Michael Huff, Shaun Phillips, Bart Scott, Israel Idonije, etc are going to do much to help this franchise. Instead, I'd rather go after younger guys, even those with some injury histories, that could be more building block than stopgap. Go after guys like Keenan Lewis, Matt Shaughnessy, Chris Clemons, Louis Delmas, Kenny Phillips, Danario Alexander, Victor Butler, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Connor Barwin, Brad Jones, Fred Davis, Antoine Cason, Julian Edelman, Kyle Arrington, Early Doucet, Rey Maualuga (eh) if you are going to sign anyone. Get them under contract for a few years and even if you overpay a little, give them every shot to become anchors for this team. They are all talented enough, and still young enough, to really help a crappy franchise like this.
After the NFL spending frenzy, the worst thing the Bills can do now is overpay for over the hill names. They have to be smart with any moves they make and look for guys that aren't just temporary fixes. Most of these guys haven't bloomed into anything more than contributors, but the Bills have plenty to offer them in terms of money and playing time. Go grab some of these younger players and hope they can expand their games and become players the Bills can count on as they someday become a winner again.
