Buffalo Bills Had Interest In Matt Hasselbeck, Per Report

Jim Brown-US PRESSWIRE

The Buffalo Bills were reportedly kicking the tires on former Titans starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck - perhaps with a short-term starting role in mind - before he signed with the Colts.

The Buffalo Bills need help at quarterback, and according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, they're among several teams interested in veteran free agent Matt Hasselbeck. Mortensen lists the Bears, Bengals, Browns, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Colts, 49ers, Giants and Saints as among the teams expressing early interest in the Tennessee Titans cast-off, then notes that more teams could join the fray.

Hasselbeck, who will turn 38 on September 25, is entering his sixteenth season in the NFL, having spent the last two of those as a part-time starter with the Titans. While never the strongest-armed quarterback, Hasselbeck - even as he's in the decline typical of the latter stages of an NFL quarterback's career - still has plenty of experience as a starter and spent the bulk of his career working with Mike Holmgren and his West Coast principled offense.

The Bills are expected to run an offense heavy in West Coast themes under new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Given the Bills' current situation at quarterback - they're likely to be starting a rookie next season based on the current shape of the roster - the team may be exploring the idea of having Hasselbeck hold the fort until a rookie is ready to play, similar to what he did in Tennessee for Jake Locker.

If the Bills pursue Hasselbeck with that goal in mind, however, it appears they'll have to beat out a lot of other suitors for Hasselbeck's services.

Update: Hasselbeck was not on the open market long. He agreed to a two-year deal with the Colts on Monday evening to back up Andrew Luck.
