With some huge holes already to fill on this roster, we sadly let some key players walk in free agency. Most noteably Andy Levitre, who was generally too expensive, but we could have at least offered him something. Donald Jones and David Nelson are exactly the kind of overachieving young guys we need to provide depth to our team, but we let them walk as well. Neither will probably ever make a Pro Bowl, but I would take either of them over any receiver we may take in the 3rd or 4th round of the draft this year. On a positive note, I’m glad we didn’t reach and overpay for any marquee free agents this year that may put us in a bind with the salary cap.
Anyway, we are all aware of the events of this offseason so far. I’m just here to post some suggestions for this team that may fit well for this upcoming season.
QB- Charlie Batch: What? Not the glamor pick up you were hoping for? I would have rather had Matt Hasselback or David Garrard, but it’s too late for that now. Charlie Batch is not a starting QB, he may not even be a No.2 but he is a true professional that can help groom whatever rookie we end up getting.
WR- Darrius Heyward-Bey: Stevie Johnson has already said he wants him on the team, so you know they won’t be fighting over how many balls each will be thrown. Heyward-Bey is still young and is a sick athlete that has a long career ahead of him. His value has slipped and we could sign him for a reasonable salary.
RT- Andre Smith: He is coming off a great year in Cincinnati, but the Bengals can’t seem to resign him. He is a bit of a loose cannon, but the former 1st round pick is still only 26 and could grow with this young Bills squad. He may cost more than the Bills want to pay, but he could be the starting RT for years to come.
LB- James Harrison: He’s getting old, but he is a former Defensive Player of the Year and I think he still has 3-4 good years in the tank. Goodell is probably lobbying for no one to sign this guy, and maybe that explains the weak market for him. He is undervalued at this point in his career and would be another guy we could pick up for a reasonable salary. Imagine how scary this defense could be with Kyle Williams, Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus, and James Harrison all attacking the QB.
Other available guys to consider: LB Bart Scott (knows Pettine’s Defense from the Jets), CB Nate Clements (who he make a return?), CB Stanford Routt (we hosted him in last year’s Free Agency, but he signed with Houston), LB Frank Zombo (cheap, young, overachieving impact player on Packers Super Bowl team) OT Jason Smith (another former Jet that maybe Pettine can help recruit), RB Ryan Grant (he’s past his prime and we don’t really need another RB, but he is similar to Fred Jackson and would help in case of injury)
