The Alternate View of the Roster: Glass 3/4th Full, A Buddy Nix defense

When I hear that Nix has done a so so job at upgrading the team from where it was, I feel like we forget where we were as a team in terms of talent. I decided to just see if I was crazy, and graded just graded them on a starter to starter comparison. I thought of contracts (why levitre is not a 100), potential (Gilmore vs McGee) development (Kyle 2009 vs Kyle 2013, and contract situation (Byrd 2009 vs Byrd 2013).

Why is this a Buddy defense? The positions he has improved are undeniable. 5 of 11 starting positions are improved directly because of him: Mario, Gilmore, Marcel, Lawson and Bradham. On offense, he improved 6 of 11 starting positions: Glenn, Stevie, Urbik, Hairston, Chandler, and CJ. He has retained top players, Stevie, Freddy, and Kyle while drafting guys with tons of upside still to show, Dareus, TJ, Stephon, Glenn, and hopefully CJ hasn't hit his ceiling yet. His question marks include Aaron Williams who was projected to be a SS by most, Troup who we have no clue on at the moment, and Sheppard who has been serviceable.

There are 31 other teams trying to improve and Nix has built a great core and has stated he will be adding a QB and WR in this draft. If he goes by his word, which he has, the core of the team will be a QB and WR in round 1 and 2 this year, Stevie, TJ, CJ, Glenn, Hairston, Urbik Chandler (possibly Fred Davis) and Freddy. Hackett ran a complete pro-style offense in 'Cuse and I firmly believe that either Barkley or Nassib will hit the ground running in his offense.

On defense, I think the talent was there, they were just horribly mismanaged and Wanny should be not allowed to touch a defense ever again. Read this if you haven't, its why Pettine is going to get the most out of this defense since 2000. He has Dareus, Kyle, Mario, Gilmore, Lawson and Byrd as core players with solid second tier players in Leodis, Anderson, Carrington, Bradham and Searcy. He has two lines that I love, "learning in the hands of the few" and "expolit weaknesses while hiding yours." Defense always has the last hand in adjustments, with Wanny it was read and react. Thus good offensive coordinators and QBs that can check into runs will always succeed against a read and react defense. Pettine's scheme is polar opposite.

In conclusion, Buddy has built a team that can truly facilitate a rookie QB. He has done it through finding a stud running back, a solidified o-line, a receiver like stevie with phenomenal route running, TJ stretching the field and has stated that he will get a big bodied receiver this off season. I'm going to guess, round 2 WR. The defense has a pro bowl caliber d-line talent in Mario, Kyle and hopefully Marcell with impact rotation from Carrington, Anderson and hopefully Troupe. Gilmore is coming into his own, Byrd is a pro bowler and Leodis has under utilized coverage skills, if put into the position facing the ball he can be exponentially better. Manny Lawson, Bradham and Sheppard are question marks but the team will make up for it. His worst decisions were Dave Wannstedt and Fitz's contract. But by in large his impact on turning this organization around from being talent-less to a young talented core is impressive. I realize this was written with the darkest rose colored beer goggles available but, I really feel this team is on the verge. If they tank this season the QB situation can be addressed again next draft and should be until its answered.

My dream for the rest of the offseason:

1 Target the qb you want. If the QB is there and we like him, take him because we think they are franchise. My order, Barkley, Nassib, Geno and Glennon. If they don’t like these guys enough then wait. I would pull the trigger on the top three there at 8.
2 Draft a top linebacker, a top linebacker will drop. Pettine will make more use of a linebacker than a rookie WR in hackets offense. My list: Arthur Brown, Kevin Minter then Jesse Williams
3 I would wait on WR till the third round, its a very very deep draft. Terrence Williams, Marcus Wheaton and Aaron Dobson all might still be on the board, one will be.
4 Top project pass rusher on the board or Matt Scott if he’s here
5 Annual buddy nix late round DB talent
6 WR/BPA.

In the comments, I listed the Buddys draft picks from rounds 1-4 and then the stand outs from rounds below those.

Its worth taking a swing this year, the team is built right now for the playoffs. In 2013 the defense will be drastically improved and by 2014, if the QB swing is a homerun, we are build with long term talent and could turn into perennial playoff team. Let's Go Bills.
