Let's Play GM!

Let's use Brian's chart from yesterday and play the role of GM for the next three years. I've made a couple of small changes for the sake of clarity when filling these positions. I've labeled WR1, WR2 and created a 'X' position. This 'X' position can be a WR3, TE2, RB2, FB or whatever you want it to be. If you play, in the comments section just label it so it is clear.

Since I am taking the time to create this fanpost, I am going to take the liberty of having first crack at filling our roster. This will also give you an outline of how to fill out your version in the comments section below. So here goes nothing!

OK, as you can see below, I used 3 draft picks to fill into starter/immediate back-up roles. I want some offensive weapons so I picked QB, WR, and TE. Most players selected after round 3 are not deemed to be NFL starter level but if you would like to fill out your roster with other rounds please go ahead! Also, I didn't name any names but if you have specific players from this draft and in future drafts go right ahead :)

Pos. Starter
WR1 2013 Draft Rd. 2
LT Cordy Glenn
LG Colin Brown/Anybody
C Eric Wood
RG Kraig Urbik
RT Chris Hairston
TE Scott Chandler/2013 Rd. 3
WR2 T.J. Graham
X Stevie Johnson
QB TJax/2013 Draft Rd. 1
RB C.J. Spiller
DE Mario Williams
UT Kyle Williams
NT Marcell Dareus
SLB Manny Lawson/Mark Anderson
MLB Kelvin Sheppard
WLB Nigel Bradham
LCB Leodis McKelvin
NCB Aaron Williams/Ron Brooks
SS Da'Norris Searcy/Aaron Williams
FS Jairus Byrd
RCB Stephon Gilmore

OK, now for 2014. Notable Free Agents are Jairus Byrd, Eric Wood, Scott Chandler and Tjax. I'm going to stay out of the FA market for the sake of simplicity but please go ahead and sign some if you'd like! For the record the Bills have about $30M in cap space next year if they do not sign any more FA's this year. I am signing Byrd to a 6yr/$48M contract, Wood to a 5yr/$30M contract and Chandler to a 2yr/$8M contract. For sake of simplicity I am just going to using a flat average to deduct from the cap. So I spent around $18M and I will carryover roughly $10M for next year. Also I decided after the 2013 season to pick up Dareus with my club option 5th year. This pays him the average of the top 10 at his position in 2015. For the sake of simplicity, I am going to assume that this will be roughly the same as this years franchise number for a DT which is around $8M.

OK, in this draft I filled the so important MLB role, another CB to compete for starting time now or in the near future and spent a round 3 pick to compete at WLB. I'm hoping that either Searcy or Williams fill in nicely at safety. If not (or if Williams surprises at CB) Safety and Guard are considerations for the Rd 3 pick.

Pos. Starter
WR1 2013 Draft Rd. 2
LT Cordy Glenn
LG Colin Brown? Someone emerges ?
C Eric Wood(re-signed $6M)
RG Kraig Urbik

TE Scott Chandler(re-signed $4M)/2013 Rd. 3
WR2 T.J. Graham
X Stevie Johnson
QB 2013 Draft Rd. 1
RB C.J. Spiller

SS Da'Norris Searcy/Aaron Williams
FS Jairus Byrd(re-signed $8M)
RCB Stephon Gilmore

OK, now for 2015. It gets tricky projecting this far out but I am hoping that my scouts did a great job and I nailed all of my draft picks. The biggest one being the QB I selected in 2013. If not, I might have to draft another QB in round 1 here(or the project QB from 2013 has emerged). The cap is also tricky to project. For the sake of this fanpost, the Bills currently sit roughly $60M under today's cap.

I have spent $26M on Byrd,Wood,Chandler and Dareus. I also carried over $10M from last year. So I have roughly $40M to spend. Notable FA's are Dareus(I got on his club option), A.Williams, K.Sheppard, D. Searcy, and Hairston. I re-sign them all to reasonable contracts(15M~20M combined). This is the year I might target a big FA signing ~10M(I don't know on who but at a glaring hole on the roster). I also need to save cap space for either re-signing or franchising Spiller and Dareus in 2016. Following the 2014 season, the Bills also have to decide whether to use the 5th year club option on Gilmore, which I do.

I need to think about drafting possible replacements here for the upcoming FA's in 2016. Or hopefully someone has emerged from some of my later draft picks. Also, I would take the proactive approach and get youngsters (notably Glenn)re-signed before getting close to free agency. Plus, Mario and Kyle have reached the 30 plateau by now so I need to find youngsters to replace them eventually.

Looking at the roster and my previous draft picks, I haven't really done much upgrading on the offensive side, so I may sign a FA there or on the defensive line or a linebacker. Ultimately, I have chosen to go the draft route on defense, spending all 3 rounds here. I personally would prefer to draft mainly offense but the way our roster has shaken out, the older guys all happen to be on defense in the front 7.

SLB Manny Lawson/Mark Anderson/2015 Rd. 3

So there's my 2015 roster with 9 new draft picks and some re-signings along the way. Spending a little time on this and keeping it relatively simple, I found that with only 3 draft picks each year that are able to contribute, it's quite difficult to project out 3 years. As a GM, though, that is part of your job. At this point I have really relied on my QB, WR and TE from the 2013 draft to solidify my offense. If they don't pan out, I have to look at future drafts(even in 2014 or 2015) or free agency to try again. I have also relied on the Bills current roster to steadily improve so that I don't need to draft their replacements either. Furthermore, I kept FA to a minimum. For one it is a lot simpler than projecting who will be free agents in the future and what it would cost to sign them. Also, I am saving major cap room to keep Dareus,Spiller, Gilmore and Glenn on the roster beyond 2015.

So there you have it. That was kind of fun and a little tricky. What do you think of my job as a GM? Also who are you going to draft (at what position and what year)? Any upcoming free agents that you like that you would sign? I used www.overthecap.com and www.spotrac.com when looking at the roster and cap space available. Please check them out when constructing your 3 year plan.

As always thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments and your 3 year plan below!
