Buffalo Bills News, 3/4: Is Andy Levitre Worth Breaking The Bank?

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Is Andy Levitre worth breaking the bank for? One local columnist doesn't think so. That plus more free agency talk in today's collected Buffalo Bills links.

Jerry Sullivan: Bills must be on guard with payroll - The Buffalo News

"I wouldn’t pay Levitre elite guard money. He’s not worth it. Levitre is a very good player. He hasn’t missed a game in his four-year career, or rarely a play. But he’s not great. He hasn’t made the Pro Bowl. He doesn’t dominate."

As much as I like Andy Levitre's game (and generally don't like Jerry Sullivan's opinions), this thought is dead on. If you're going to pay Levitre as an elite guard, he had better be an elite guard. While he has been good to great at times, I don't think what I've seen is worth it to the franchise to hamstring themselves in other areas. Like Sullivan, I would rather see Buffalo "break the bank" in other spots on the field.

"The biggest question currently confronting the Bills is whether $3 million will be paid to Fitzpatrick in the near future — chased by a $200,000 workout bonus and a $4.35 million base salary during the season."

Kelsay’s exit from Bills no surprise - Olean Times Herald
"KELSAY’S exit, via retirement, wasn’t a surprise. And it’s not unreasonable to speculate the Bills might have nudged him in that direction." Pollack makes an apt retirement comparison to Phil Hansen. Hopefully Kelsay doesn't end up on the Wall of Fame, too.

Bills need to re-sign guard Levitre | Kryk Slants | Toronto Sun
"Unless the club is merely playing possum until the deadline gets closer, or unless it’s clearing massive room for another big dive into the free-agent pool — and heaven knows, there are positions of greater need on the AFC East club than offensive guard — Bills GM Russ Brandon and GM Buddy Nix should no longer hesitate in re-signing Levitre."

In Case You Missed It

- The Buffalo Bills used their franchise tag on Jairus Byrd but that doesn't mean the two sides can't agree on a long term deal by July 15.

- Stevie Johnson went on the recruiting trail this week, per Tim Graham of The Buffalo News. Graham also had this story of Corey McIntyre testing free agency but willing to re-sign in Buffalo.

- Andy Levitre hasn't received an offer yet, again per Graham, and not one but two local reporters think the Bills could add an offensive tackle early in the draft.
