To give our brains a break from the constant OL/QB talk with this upcoming draft, I would like to turn our attention to a need on our team that we are lacking right now, which is safety! Yes the position in which Mike Pettine defense does not distinguish between a SS/FS but rather a player who can do it all so to speak. If watching the playoffs didn't show you, it's that a SS like Bernard Pollard can change a game in just a handful of plays when he sprinkles a little nasty in his gameplay, which is why this position is of so much importance in today's pass happy NFL.
This morning, Dawan Landry was released by JAX for budgetary reasons. Even at the age of 30 the guy is still putting up 100 tackle seasons and when used properly in zone, has demonstarted he can play the ball with some of the best athletes in the game. At 6'1/212 he's a bigger safety who has familiarity with Pettine back in Baltimore, plus he played college ball at Georgia Tech. so he's a shoe-in as far as Buddy Nix is concerned. This season he was set to earn $5.35 million but since he was cut he will cost the team $3.9 million in dead money, so he could be had for a reasonable price when you factor in that he's now 30 and may just want to play somewhere he's comfortable in. Would you want Dawan Landry in Buffalo next season?
Then of course there are the other safety options: Dashon Goldson, Ed Reed, Charles Woodson, Louis Delmas and Dawan's brother LaRon Landry! Of course there is the other avenue of drafting a safety like Kenny Vaccaro, Matt Elam, Shemarko Thomas etc. So let's discuss who we would want and why below, keeping in mind the price tag that would likely come attached with the free agent players.
