I got to admit, I have really enjoyed this post. I am not a football expert by any means and I can hardly understand a lot of the algorithms and calculations that Football Outsiders and other stats people are using, but I am ready to buy into it. I want the Bills to do the same thing.
Film is fun to watch and maybe it can show you some stuff, but seriously, I want the Bills to go hardcore into using stats and analytics to build and operate a team. Let's take Landry Jones with his absurd LCF. Let's find all the statistical anomalies that are out there an build a team full of them. Big money free agents and big name draft picks...whatever. I want diamonds in the rough and risks that are backed up by math.
Unfortunately, we are stuck with Buddy Nix as our GM. The guy who telegraphs his draft picks and doesn't know the meaning of smokescreens. The guy who just heard about stats last year. And his boss is Russ Brandon, the guy who proclaims we are going to have a robust analytics department, yet who was helping run the team when we drafter Losman and Edwards (both who were statistical jokes coming out of college).
I don't care about film or intangibles. Show me cold hard calculations that show that a player is a potential jewel of a player and then find a way to bring them in and get coaches who can get results out of them. Fire the whole front office and hand the team over to some people at Football Outsiders. Why not? Could the results possibly be much worse than they have been over the last decade?
