The Bills fans on this site seem far higher on Nassib than on any of the other sites I frequent. But ignoring for the moment who you think we should draft and when, understand that whatever your loyalties are you should hope that Nassib is an absolutely horrible QB unfit to even be in the NFL. I know it sounds cruel, but let me explain.
Nassib played at a certain level in college. There are differing opinions on what that level was, but it's undeniable that you could quantify that as some value. Now that level was reached as part of three main factors.
- Nassib's natural talent.
- His coaches' ability to train him up efficiently.
- His coaches' ability to use him effectively in a game.
So at one end of the spectrum, Nassib is horrible QB that his coaches trained up to very near his ceiling and squeezed every drop of playing ability out of him that they could. On the other end, he's an amazing QB with the potential to be a HOFer that the coaches failed so badly at training/using that most analysts don't even consider him worthy of a first round pick. Obviously it's probably someone in the middle.
Now, consider we've already signed the coaches responsible for 2+3, and Nassib is only one of a number of QBs we have the option of drafting, shouldn't we all hope it falls closer to the first part of that spectrum? I'd love for Marrone and Hackett to be a couple of QB gurus that make whoever they touch look far better than they are.
I mean what's better, a talented Nassib that maybe grows into being a franchise QB on natural talent? Or is it the chance to take Barkley and make everyone wonder how he ever fell out of favor with the media? Or taking Geno and having people all over the internet shamed at their repeated claims that there weren't any QBs worth a top 10 pick this year.
I'm not very high on Nassib, but I'm not a professional scout. As such, I'm even more likely than they are to be completely wrong on him. That said, I hope for the sake of Buffalo's future he's far worse than even I think he is. :)
