Buffalo Bills' Jairus Byrd to skip voluntary off-season workouts

Rick Stewart

The free safety won't show to voluntary workouts after being franchise tagged this offseason.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone and his coaching staff will have their first minicamp with veterans this Tuesday through Thursday, but at least one big name won't be in attendance. Jairus Byrd is not planning on attending the voluntary sessions, per NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Byrd, the recipient of Buffalo's franchise tag in early March, still has not signed the one-year, $6.9 million deal; he's one of just two franchise tagged players (the other: Denver left tackle Ryan Clady) that has not yet signed his offer.

Mandatory workouts don't begin until June 11 when the team's mandatory minicamp kicks off, and Rapoport says it's "unclear" on whether or not Byrd plans to skip those, as well, or attend as usual. Buffalo's pre-season workouts began with its off-season conditioning stretch on April 2, which many Bills veterans have elected not to attend.

The last player to hold out of mandatory work for the Bills was left tackle Jason Peters in 2008. That holdout lasted until just prior to the 2008 regular season, and Peters was eventually traded to Philadelphia just prior to the 2009 NFL Draft.
