Jeff Tuel

Now, I'm going to start this with a bit of a disclaimer. I am NOT a Tuel hater. I think he played great yesterday and he certainly deserves some credit and props. I'm writing this however for the people who are taking this single performance and going a wee bit overboard with it. We all know the Bills QB starved we've been for a while. We want a damn great QB and it's high time we found one. Now, I'm going to try to debunk why Tuel isn't that person. I'm sure someone will have something I've never even though of and tear me up on the comments but here goes.

1. I brought up that he played largely against Indy's third string defense in a comment and was practically dismissed. The reasoning I got was that he was playing with our third string defense. But what does that really prove? To me, it proves that our third string defense is better than Indy's third string defense. Indy is not a defensively stacked team so I take his stats with a grain of salt. He was still damn impressive though for his first NFL action.

2. Someone will undoubtedly bring up that undrafted or late drafted players find NFL success and then provide a list. Tom Brady is everyone's favorite example. However, for every success story there are dozens of failures. Tuel could be one of those special people but the odds are certainly not in his favor. In fact, he would be quite a longshot to be a starting QB in the NFL. And no, I highly doubt his one preseason game would automatically get him drafted. Teams had four years of rather unspectacular tape on him. NFL scouts are not infallible but its not like he was putting up astronomical numbers like say Case Keenum.

3. With Kolb's injury history a good amount of Rumblers seem to think we should cut bait with him and have Tuel based on his one preseason game be the number 2. After all, the Redskins did it right? Well, as some other Rumblers pointed out the Redskins kept Grossman on their roster as veteran insurance. Even they didn't know what they had in Kirk Cousins at first. Granted, that worked out well for them and now people are saying they're really smart for doing that. Buffalo would NOT be smart to do that. Cutting Kolb won't help us in any way shape or form. Also, Tuel has quite an injury history of his own hence the lack of great game tape.

Now, like I mentioned earlier I was impressed with his performance but we need to calm down a little. I love endless excitement and optimism as much as the next guy but it's getting a little overboard. We still don't know if he's the next coming of say Drew Bledsoe. Let's watch him play a bit more before we get ahead of ourselves ok everyone? IF he keeps it up he might just be worthy of a roster spot but I'm perfectly sure it won't be at the expense of Kolb. And the few people who are saying Tuel is better Manuel, just stop.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
