So i've been on the fence about Roger Goodell. I know he's trying to make the game safer and I agree that certain things should be done to protect the players. That is fine even if I don't agree with every rule they put into place.
There have been more than a few people here who have criticized Goodell for various reasons. Chiefly among them is probably the "softening" of the league in which big hits seem to be discouraged. Being a guy that loves hard nosed football I agree that the league has become soft, but I also recognize the added value in watching your favorite players week in and week out make awesome plays. So that's kind of give and take.
What isn't give and take for me is that football is in the entertainment business and Goodell is starting to take the entertainment out the NFL.
Here are the new celebration rules for the 2013 season:
These acts include but are not limited to: sack dances; home run swing; incredible hulk; spiking the ball; throwing or shoving the ball; pointing; pointing the ball; verbal taunting; military salute; standing over an opponent (prolonged and with provocation; or dancing."
O.k. so I get some of these. The standing over an opponent and verbal taunting I kind of get. But you cannot SPIKE THE FU***** FOOTBALL????????????? Isn't spiking the football a time honored tradition at this point? That one about pissed me off big time. Not to mention sack dances, incredible hulk, spinning the ball because outlawing them is about ridiculous as well. But NO SPIKING OF THE FOOTBALL?
Sorry, but Goodell has crossed a line with me on that one. I could see good arguments for a few of these but NO SPIKING OF THE FOOTBALL?!?!?!?!?!
