How's EJ doing? A comparison

One of the most painful realities about being a Bills fan last year was watching Fitzpatrick struggle while simultaneously hearing about how terrific the four rookie starting quarterbacks were doing. It got just worse and worse as the year went on.

After hearing some criticism of Manuel this past week, I decided to see how EJ’s stats were at the quarter point of the season compared to the four rookie quarterbacks last year. I debated whether or not Tannehill belonged in the same category as Russell Wilson, RGIII and Andrew Luck, but decided it wouldn’t hurt to include him. Here are there side by side stats through four games:

In summary, EJ is right in the middle of the pack for every single stat – falling between 2nd and 4th in almost every category. Overall, his stats most directly compare to Andrew Luck – they have similar completion percentages, yard per attempt, TD/turnover ratios and quarterback rating. Of course his attempts and subsequent total yards passing are much lower.

Statistics don’t tell the whole story of course, and its hard to compare the more intangible aspects of a quarterbacks game. However, looking at the bigger picture: the Seahawks, Redskins and Colts were 2-2 at this point, and all three of their quarterbacks had 1 fourth quarter comeback. Tannehill and the fish were 1-3 and he didn’t lead a fourth quarter comeback.

Additionally, I wanted to see how fans reacted after these quarterbacks lost early in the season – sort of gauging the eyeball test I guess. RGIII was pretty beloved by all fans. Luck and Tannehill had plenty of detractors, but there was some balance in the fan comments. Seahawks fans wanted to tar and feather Wilson. Here is a quick sampling..

We were promised improved QB play

Wilson has been worse than Tarvaris. He has been putrid, sickening, disastrous. I don’t see why it’s such a big deal to bench him. It is pretty clear to me that he cannot operate an NFL offense at this point. Flynn might not be very good (or he might be, who the hell knows), but it’s a near certainty that would be able to execute a game plan and deal with pressure much better than Wilson. Wilson hasn’t shown any progress, and I don’t see why the hell we should have to wait 6 or 8 or 10 games to see if he improves when we have a borderline elite defense and explosive running game.

Andrew Luck's Mechanics...again...

Luck was 3-5 feet high all day. Something to do with his footwork. Today he was striding too long. Stride too long—ball sails high. Stride too short—ball dives low. Footwork has been a problem in his past as written about before

Again, please note that I’m not saying Manuel is or will be as good as these quarterbacks. He needs to improve just like these four did. But I thought this provided me with some perspective on what is reasonable to expect out of a rookie quarterback in his first four games.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
