Bills vs. Patriots, NFL Week 1: second half open thread

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Turnovers have defined the first half with Buffalo down 17-14 as they receive the ball to start the second half.

Turnovers. Brian Galliford wrote in this space earlier this week that the Buffalo Bills needed to curb turnovers in order to beat the New England Patriots and 28 of the 31 points scored in the first half have been off turnovers, as Buffalo trails 17-14.

It began ominously with a C.J. Spiller fumble which Tom Brady and company turned into a 7-0 lead. After the Patriots added a field goal, Buffalo closed the gap when running back Stevan Ridley fell down and the ball came out before he was touched. Da'Norris Searcy scooped up the ball and ran 70 yards to make it 10-7. Late in the second quarter, Marquise Goodwin put the ball on the grass which turned into another Tom Brady to Julian Edelmann touchdown. To cap the half, Justin Rogers picked off a tipped passand two plays later E.J. Manuel found Robert Woods to make it 17-14.

Penalties are still a major factor for Buffalo, stalling several drives. Buffalo led the NFL during the preseason and already has seven penalties for 55 yards in the first half.

The Bills also get the ball to start the second half and can take their first lead of the game on the opening drive. Discuss it here!
