Patriots-Bills final score: Buffalo falls late to New England, 23-21

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

EJ Manuel and the Buffalo Bills gave the New England Patriots everything they could handle in Orchard Park today, but it wasn't enough as a late Pats field goal sunk the Bills.

What a start to the Doug Marrone era with the Buffalo Bills. EJ Manuel and company gave the New England Patriots everything they could handle in Orchard Park today, but it wasn't enough as a late Stephen Gostkowski field goal sunk the Bills, 23-21.

Buffalo couldn't overcome their many mistakes, as penalties, turnovers and drops doomed the Bills. After a Stevie Johnson drop on third down late in the fourth quarter which would have given the Bills a first down, the Bills didn't touch the ball again until after the Patriots' final score. Despite winning the turnover battle, Buffalo's 10 penalties for 75 yards hurt the team's ability to pull out the win.

Manuel finished his NFL debut with no turnovers and two touchdowns, throwing for 150 yards and two touchdowns. C.J. Spiller was held to 41 yards in his first start, while Fred Jackson added 67 in relief.

Buffalo (0-1) now looks forward to the Carolina Panthers who come to town in Week 2. We'll obviously have much more on this contest soon.
