Marquise Goodwin injury: out indefinitely after hand surgery

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Buffalo's rookie third-round pick fractured his hand in the Bills' season-opening loss to New England, and will obviously be out of the lineup indefinitely.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Marquise Goodwin suffered a hand fracture in the first half of yesterday's 23-21 loss to the New England Patriots, and had surgery on Monday to repair it, according to head coach Doug Marrone.

Goodwin has not been ruled out for the year, per Marrone, but will be out of the lineup indefinitely.

It's not clear when, exactly, Goodwin injured the hand in the game. He caught one short pass on the afternoon - fumbling it away on the play - and caught several deep kickoffs that he didn't return. When the second half began, T.J. Graham was the kick returner.

Goodwin, a third-round pick out of Texas, had been working in as the fourth receiver in the first half. His vertical speed was an asset that the Bills planned to use this season, but that role will now fall exclusively to Graham, who was already ahead of him on the depth chart anyway.

Marcus Easley is the likely playing time beneficiary with Goodwin out of the lineup; he took one snap as the fourth receiver in the second half on Sunday, and has a good chance at becoming the top kickoff returner, as well.
