Broncos-Seahawks a Super Bowl first since Bills-Giants

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

The last time the top scoring defense and top scoring offense faced each other in the Super Bowl, the Buffalo Bills lost to the New York Giants. This time around, it's Denver's offense trying to trump Seattle's defense.

The Denver Broncos have the number on scoring offense in the NFL while the Seattle Seahawks sport the number one defense. Something has to give on Super Bowl Sunday, and it's a scenario that's familiar to Buffalo Bills fans.

The K-Gun offense led by Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly scored 428 points in 1990, while the Broncos - with future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning at the helm - set an NFL record with 606 points in 2013. Denver's lowest point total this season was a 20-point effort in Week 15, while the 1990 Bills were held under 20 points five times, including in Super Bowl XXV.

The New York Giants defense, led by coordinator Bill Belichick, only allowed one team to exceed 21 points the entire 1990 season, and limited the K-Gun in the big game. Buffalo scored 19 points in the Super Bowl, despite 371 yards of offense. Seattle only allowed one team to eclipse 24 points in 2013.

We've heard the saying that defense wins championships, and in January of 1991, the Giants defense certainly did. Will the Seahawks have similar success this February?
